got everything working shifting via 3 way switch..engine purring like a kitten. Just for curosity I pulled the drain plug on the lower unit of my 1971 johnson 50 hp 50else71s and what do we have MILK! So like the red neck i am i un bolted the lower unit and seperated it from the otheronly about 6 inches of seperation due the the shifting wires were stuck and wouldn't pull through. Then i filled the lower unit with trans fluid as full and as tight as i could pump it. Hoping to be able to locate the sorce of the leak..no such luck so i left it there for an hour  or so...no leak yet so i thought maybe i left a little trnas fluid in last time when i flushed the system so i bolted everything back up and refilled it with the propper fluid OMC premium blend. Ran for about 10 min on muffs..rechecked.....milk.now i am wondering how many places can water get in i am thinking under the water pump...i dunno. so thats my question for ya.where do i begin looking for the leak? ohh by the way when I undid the pump i used to fill the unit with trans fluid..it had pressure still on it it covered my from head to toe as i was taking it off .sorry so long just wanted you to know all i have did to track down the problem.

Is it truely milky?

Many times I have drained oils after recent use an they will be aireated, appearing somewhat opaque, or milky.

Perhaps if you wait a day before draining the oil it will be apparent. If water has actually made it's way in there. In the thinner oils water should settle out in a day, and become very apparent when you pull the plug.

I've used a inner tube valve stem removed from an old bike tube, with the rubber slightly ground to a taper (screwed in the filler hole) to add a few psi to a L/U for pressure testing. To vacuum test it has to be done with a vacuum source, and guage.

how long will it appear aeriated?.And being my luck water is present ,is there a gasket ,o-ring.seal? under the water pump that could allow water to pass through only when rotating and have a perfectly good seal when things are not moving?

You have two gaskets inside the lower unit. One is for the shift rod and the other is right below the water pump. Check your manual on how to replace.
