B100 some questions

Hello,

I have an old (unknown build date) B100 which acts up a bit. It starts first pull. It runs great most of the time, but sometimes when @ higher revs, it stalls. Sometimes it even dies when this happens. Going from idle speed to half or WOT it hesitates. This all made me wonder if the carb was clean, so took it apart, cleaned it. Does not fix the problem..

Grabbed a Xenon lamp, tested timing. Timing ok, when it stalls it does still spark. Hmm.

Ok now the questions:

The B100 has no airfilter. Only a mesh wire in a plastic in front of the choke valve. Is this normal (it would seem to me not to be ideal for the carburetor).

Any ideas on the stall going from idle to higher revs? When engine is cold this problem is less evident.

Any suggestions on what to check/where to look are highly appreciated, and yes I am trying to get a workshop-manual (so far, local Honda dealers dont want to sell them, they want to fix the engine)

Thanks,

David (currently using a Mercury 2 stoke 8HP ughe ughe)

Re: B100 some questions

Hi all,

Honda here in the Netherlands didn't return my call (asking for a workshop manual) nor answer my email. Local shops don't want to sell me the manual, they want to fix the engine.

Via Iboats I ordered the '1200' 1978-2001 Honda 4stroke manual. This took abt. 5 minutes to do. Now waiting for the delivery :)

I do need some info since I also doubt the timing (the belt can be the way it is, or one tooth advanced , both work, both run shabby ... strange...)

David

Sounds like a fuel problem, when this happens does pumping the bulb make any difference?

Hi 45_red,

Thanks for your reply! Pumping bulb makes no diff. tho. :-(

I am not sure where to reference the T(TDC) and F(contact just open) marks on the flywheel to. I did discover that adjustment by one notch makes it possible to idle much slower and it picks up speed better (yes I did check and no, the valves do not hit anything). Guess I have to be patient for my manual. Meanwhile any replies are highly appreciated tho.

David

Re: B100 some questions

Remove your recoil starter and while looking at the rear boss that starter bolted to you will see a tiny cast in point on the flywheel side of the boss. This is where you will align the T mark on your flywheel.Meanwhile you will also notice a dot stamped on your cam pulley and have probably not noticed an identical dot stamped in your cylinder head just behind that starter boss. This where your cam should be at TDC.Then rotate the flywheel a full turn and the little tattoo looking arrow should be pointing at the dot on the cyl head. That is TDC #2.

Re: B100 some questions

Hi Hondon,

Thanks, I found the mark after recoil starter removal. Indeed the belt was off by one notch. Amazing that the Honda dealer did not notice it.

As I mentioned before, it now idles @ lower RPM's. Next on the list is adjustment of valves as I can hear them rattle now. Clearance specs are unknown to me (waiting for manual). If anyone has 'em I'd appreciate a post.

I will post as soon as I find true reason that the engine cuts out every now and then.

Cheers,

David

Re: B100 some questions

Hi all,

I received my manual today (already!). That is fast! Good source of info too.

Anyway, I found that the spark plug caps (screw on type) had contact problems. I cut about 1cm from the cables and refitted the caps. Contact problems are gone now. Gonna adjust the valves tomorrow and see how it works then.

I'll keep ya'll informed.

Cheers,

David

Re: B100 some questions

Hi,

I adjusted the valves. Runs a lot better now.
Some rattle remains but I found it to be the starter assy (when removed from engine the engine is very quiet).

However, the hesitation when going from idle to higher revs remains.

Looking at the book, I saw a picture showing the air intake. In the picture the air intake points downwards. On my engine it pointed upwards (was like that when I bought it). Changed it, it's now like the picture, pointing downwards. Guess what?! The hesitation is gone!!!!

Anyway, the real snag being the engine cutting out on me every so often (and it always ran perfectly in the test-tank) may or may not be solved with the spark plug cap issue. Time will tell.

Just felt like letting everyone in on my findings.

Oh, btw, I found an interesting link... http://www.honda-marine.com/mar_pages/

TTFN

David
