Hello,

My axle broke on my trailer from rust i have found from links on this forum replacments. i know i have a 3500lb square axle it used to have hydraulic brakes but they never worked when i had the trailer ( the load is light now and it didnt need them ) anyways my question is i see assemblies sold with idler hubs? what are those? are they just small hubs with no braking system? And if so does that mean the axle doesnt have to have the brake plates?

Thanks in Advanced

Re: Axle replacment

Lugnut,

You can buy axles rated for your trailer with or without brake capability.

I would not buy an axle rated for less than the trailer rated (placard) capacity.

Axles come with or without brake mounting plates. The cost between the two is minimal. Go with axles with the capability of adding brakes.

As far as the hubs go, most outfits sell the axles with "pre mounted" hubs. That is a good deal. You then know that the bearings are seated and are compatible with the axle stubs.

I do recommend addind "Bearing Buddies" after the installation of the axle.

Re: Axle replacment

Thanks,

Originally i was going to go with southwest wheel ( i think thats the name) but then they told me the spring seats i would have to weld on so i said forget it. and called champion trailer i measured from where the "tire" would seat/touch the hub to hub i got a weird number 86.5 inches but i double checked it and 70 inches for spring centers i went with idler hubs though instead of replacing the drum hydraulics. I have a square axle that has a 1 inch drop or so the new axle has no drop its straight, but my trailer has another set of holes about 1 1/2 inches above old spring mount so i will use those to offset the height difference.

again appreciate the help happy boating/trailering
