Hi, I have an Avon Ranger S4.60 i am currentlyu running it with a johnson 25hp from the 1970's it's a short shaft, i have found that when i get the boat on the plain the engine starts to cavitate. on the plate it say's the bopat will take a 55hp but does not state what length leg engine i should be using, i have heard some talking about cutting the transom down any ideas?

Measure top transom vertically towards lower keel, if measuring 38-40 cm lenght it's for a short shaft, if much longer 45 + cm it's for a long shaft motor, you can cut transom down to 40 cm to match a short shaft engine, do takes it's time with a skilled fiberglass tec to do the job well.

Happy Boating
