I just pulled my starter to have a look at my flywheel.. Its worn very badly and wont start. Im curious as to what a ring gear replacement will cost. Its a mercruiser 5.7L. I know the engine will have to be pulled. What should I expect to pay for this repair, Im sure I could get all kinds of prices from low to high... Just curious as to what the average repair cost should be.. Can anyone tell me what I should expect?

Re: Average cost????

depends on the shop labor rate

most reputable repair shops are around $100/hr for labor

figure at least four hours of labor to replace the ring gear plus parts (minumum, if its an easy pull and everything goes well/no other issues are found)

if half the boat needs to come apart to pull the motor = more time/more labor

this is a job that one with mechanical skills and logic can do themselves, search for engine pulling threads on iboats for ideas/info

Re: Average cost????

I think my marine guy is like $85/hr.. I plan on removing the holding tanks, Batteries, Ect before taking to the shop.. I should be an easy pull... Its going to need a large (high) A-frame or something to pull cause it a fairly high boat on the trailer.. Im thinking is going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $900-$1200.... Dose that sound about right?

based on your mechanics shop rate, you do the math - but i wouldn't be surprised to see the bill be that much

most reputable shops have an engine hoist on an I-beam so no need for an a-frame set-up

Re: Average cost????

1/2 hr remove drive
1 hr Everything just un-hooks/un-bolts to remove motor and the motor is clean to just be raised straight up and out, add jockey time to clear
add 2-3 hrs cutting the rear mount bolt heads off and removing whats left
1-2 hrs remove starter/ rear housing/ flywheel ,R/R ring gear, reassemble
1-2 hrs install motor, realign, reconnect everything, install drive, test run
