Automatic Trim Tabs Or Trim tilt motor

Hello, I hope your day is going well!<br /><br />I would like some oppinions on if I should use trim tabs or my hydrolics on my I/O? do you have to use both? or can you use one or the other?<br />Heres the boat info.<br /><br />ASI IMPERIAL MADE BY ALL SEASON IND. MARKEL IN. MODEL#V182 18 foot, <br />MERCRUSIER 140 GM 181 CID-3.0L<br />8 persons or 1115# if that helps. <br /><br />I am in the process of finishing this project and need some input!<br /><br />Thanks for your responses in advance!

What boat and engine? Weight and length will help. I have a 19' I/o and use both the trim on the outdrive and a set of the SmartTabs advertised above and have all the control I was looking for.

ASI;<br /><br />I am not quite sure what your question is. If you are asking if you should repare your motor tilt and trim and rely only on the trim tabs or if the question is opporational.<br /><br />I would never recommend leaving any equipment un attended or non functional.<br /><br />If the question is which you should use to opporate the boat most effectively, the answer is more control is usually better.<br /><br />Tilt is used to move the motor or outdrive up and down typically for trailering. Trim is used to adjsut the boat attitude with the prop thrust. <br /><br />Trim Tabs should be thought of as an extention of the hull which is ajusted to correct the boat attitude and running issues. For example, the trim tabs will allow the boat to minimize the bow rise at slow speeds, put the boat on plane at lower speeds, Tow skiers or tubes easier, improve the ride and handling when cruising.<br /><br />Do a search on Trim Tabs and Smart Tabs, you will have plenty to read.

You will certainly NEED the tilt & trim to be functional. If for no other reason than to be able to get the boat on and off a trailer at your local landing, and there are lots of other reasons like shallow water.<br /><br />Smart Tabs are another story: You don't need them. But given the power to weight ratio I strongly suspect that once you install a set you'll have a much safer, comfortable and enjoyable boating experience with this boat.

I sometimes ask the dumbest questions! I forgot about trailering and shallow watter have been doing so much on this project I am loosing my mind! Thanks for the replies! I will use both! The tabs look like a great option! Will be ordering them soon.
