I am changing the filter and fluid om my Plymouth Voyager. The automatic transmission pan originally had a sealant between the pan and transmission. The new filter came with a cork gasket. Should I use the cork gasket or sealant? Also, anybody know what is a reasonable amount of metal on the magnet in the pan?

Re: Automatic Transmission gasket

I would use the gasket. Just keep in mind not to over tighten it. Also install it dry.

Its hard to say how much is to much. If the tranny is working properly I would assume theres not to much metal residue on it. Now if your serviceing it because you have been noticing some kwirks/glitches ?????????

Good Luck

O.K. I installed the gasket and everything seems fine now.

Yeah, it was shifting hard and the fluid was leaking from the corner of the pan. It has 135,000 miles on it and I think I just let the fluid level get low. Shifts fine now, just concerned I've done some damage by letting the fluid get too low.

If that's an A604 / 41TE transmission you've got in there, I hope you used the correct ATF+3 fluid (mopar 7176) during your refill rather than Dexron. Also, it seems to me that hard shifting would often be solved by refilling with the proper fluid, and changing the fluid fairly regularly.

I've no experience with that tranny in a van, but more than I would care to have in an Intrepid. When a local shop filled it a quart or two low, (with Dextron III against my instructions no less) I seemed to loose reverse and first on hills and such.

Yes Paul, I did use ATF+3 fluid. As I said, I LET THE TRANSMISSION FLUID GET LOW  O.K? I screwed up, I admit it :)

:) Just wanted to make sure, since it's so important on that guy.
Like I said, my experience with low fluid on that transmission was to loose (or seem to loose) first. When revved about 1500rpm, it would grab hold and take off. It was really bad after running down a steep hill.

Re: Automatic Transmission gasket

Thanks Paul. Actually really good advise. I usually do a pretty good job with changing oil, brakes tires etc. This van and my F150 are actually the first automatics I've had that I put more than 100,000 miles on.

I usually drive highway miles so I didn't see a problem until I made a sharp U-turn and it slipped out of gear. Lesson Learned

Wow, from what I hear, you're doing great. I can't remember the number of people with Chrysler minivans that have told me they've already replaced the trans by 80k.
I changed the trans filter in a GM 3 speed auto a lot, and it always had the magnet covered with real fine metal, more like a silverish sludge. Seemed to be no difference between when I changed it at 50k, 85k, 130k, 160k. Looked the same everytime. And I always used the cork gasket supplied, only. I always tightened until the gasket started to squeeze out a little. Then after running, I might recheck & retighten

I hate those crysler 4 speed tranies. 89,000 first tranny rebuilt. traded it at 140,000 due to tranny blow oil everywhrere and sticking in second again!
