Automatic oiler on 60hp merc

I've heard it is possible to disconnect the automatic oiler on my 60hp merc outborad. I would rather mix the gas with the oil..Heard too many stories where engine blew up because oiler quit. Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated...Thanks....

Can you ID which 60 horse Merc you have. Depending on the model, there are several types used over the years.

I think for the most part the 3 cylinder Mercs oil injection system is reliable. The pump at least. Usually the oil lines and fittings that let it down if left unchecked.
If you do bypass it?s a case of removing the engine driven shaft and either boxing back up and blocking lines and ports or fitting a blank and blocking lines and fittings (to stop air being drawn).
50/1 pre mix in the tank then required.

You have to clean and do maintenance on the oilier system every year.
It's lack of maintenance that stops the oil.
This motor was designed for the oilier, there is a filter in there that plugs up,you need to change it every season.
Keep it clean everything's going to be alright.

The oil pump is gear driven off the crankshaft of the engine by a gear. If the gear is missing, there is no drive and no pumping. Nothing moves in or out if no pump rotation.

On my 90 hp, I removed the 3 screws holding the pump to the engine block, pulled the pump back for access, and pulled the drive gear/shaft out, ensuring that there weren't any spacer washer or other "thing" loose in the process....there wasn't. I remounted the pump assy back on the engine and went my merry way with my 50:1 pre mix................
