Hello,

Finally, i think i found the serial number of Mercury 500.

There IS a place at the block where the following is stamped in:

"full jeweled super thunderbolt H" "831-1739"

Is the 831-1739 the serial?? If it is, i can't find it in any chart. Some postings here suggest, this could be an australian serial. Are there charts for australian models?

Here is a picture too....

Australian S/Ns do start with 8* , but your 831* doesn't match that motor. Mine is 8055* Aust and it's a 50 (Not 500) about '81.
http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=527/1413DSCN1292-med.jpg
Your's is pre 1978 by the band colours and looks like a 1972-74. The S/N should be found on the bracket, but brackets and plates can be replaced.
Haven't found an Aussie Chart.. And I live there.

Re: australian serial chart?

Thats because it's a bigger motor and they had different types of covers for the different HP's
My motor is this one
http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=527/1413DSCN1292-med.jpg and is "Rounder" like yours coz it's a 50. That 1* number doesn't line up with anything.Reckon it would start with a 3* and have 7 digits.
Try an image search on the web for 73 merc or 72 merc and see what surfaces.

Bubbacat.
I have no doubt that you are right. Nobody knows your motor like the you. I know every inch of mine and can spot the same year anywhere. From '72 through to '74 they look alike, but a without that S/N you can only go by the blue bands on the wrapper and the bottom cowling.
