Fly Fishers,

I've never been fly fishing and don't know anything about it.

Today, the CEO of the company asked me about a good brand/model of fly reels that he wants to get for someone as a retirement gift.

Something in the $400 - $500 price range would probably be appropriate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sage makes a really nice high end large arbor reel. They have just come out with a new 2500 series that may be in that price range.

Need a bit more info:

What kind of fishing...Salt or Fresh water?

What species of fish are targeted?

What kind of rod(s) will it be going on?

What are his favorite patterns to fish?

etc. etc.

However,
One thing you might want to offer consiederation of is to spend a little less on the reel but also pick up a spare spool. This affords a lot more versatility as you can be lined up or down to fish up to 3 different rods with the same reel package.

I personally have J Ryall reels in 2, 4, 6, & 8 wt. and love them. They had a strong prescence in the flyfishing arena a few years back but I have not seen them offered by retailers lately.
Other good manuracturers to look at are Bauer and Loop.

He's a lucky guy! I'd take good fishing gear over a Rolex watch any day.

Let us know what you decide

Thanks for the info, guys.

I really don't know the guy who's getting the gift and I don't think the CEO knows much about where/what he fishes for .. just knows that he likes fly fishing.

I like the idea of a reel with a spare spool and maybe a nice box of flys to go with it.

GG, I took a look at those Sage reels and they are very nice looking..look more like art than fishing equipment. I'm sure the big man will like it! :)

PAkev, I agree with you too - I'd much rather have fishing gear than a Rolex. When I retire and I'm fishing all day, I'm NOT going to want to know what time it is! :)
