My step-daughter and her husband will be moving to Palo Alto in August. My wife would like to be nearer to her grandchildren than here in Ohio. I have no desire to live in California but I'll put it out there for suggestion. We would like to be near water, and where the cost of living/real estate isn't beyond ridiculous. Any ideas?

Anywhere west of the I-5 from Wash to Oregon looks pretty nice.

You need to get over that. You can live in CA with any lifestyle, setting, economics that you want. The options here are endless. Farming, ranches, high rises, ocean, desert. mountains, rolling hills, privacy, off the grid, in the grid, freshwater, salt water, hot springs, snow, drought, river, lake, heavy traffic, middle of nowhere, middle of everywhere, pine trees, high altitude, sea level, below sea level. Heck you can live in a teepee here if that's your bag. Whassup?

#1 It's CALIFORNIA, not Cali.
#2 No such thing as "the cost of living/real estate isn't beyond ridiculous" here, maybe East of I-5.

Seriously Palo Alto is not cheap.

Interesting choices. Thanks. If anyone has any more I'll take them. Oh, and sorry about the Cali thing.

You could live on Discovery Bay and be about an hour from the grandkids. Sacramento is pretty nice and the River is a lot of fun. You can float all the way to SF Bay. Folsom, east of Sacramento has a beautiful lake, as well. There's also some space along the San Joaquin River delta which is nice, waterfront living. Or you could live nearby and trailer over.

Palo Alto to Sacramento/Folsom: 1.5 hours
Delta to Palo Alto: 1.5 to 2 hours depending on location.

I'm a lifelong Californian who has lived in all the places I've mentioned. Feel free to PM me your phone number if you want to talk live and I can talk you through some more.

We live in Discovery Bay. It's more like 2 hours to Palo Alto from here.

You can live on the "fast water" in the development, and a 2400 SF house runs ~ $600K. Or you can live on the LAKE side of the development (still have a water view, just need to use the public launch to get to open water), and buy a house for $250K.

Sacramento is a good bet, but it gets quite hot. Close to Folsom, the Sacramento River, and has an airport.

Redding, IMO, is too distant. You're 6 hours driving time from Palo Alto, no major airport, and Lake Shasta/Trinity are beautiful, but cold except for 3 months out of the year.

Livermore isn't bad - close to launch areas on the Delta, and about 80-90 minutes to Palo Alto.

If you have other questions, let me know.
