hi there,

i have a new 40 HP Honda that has done only 5 hours work. Is it normal for these motors to cough, splutter ansd stall until they are run in and are the problems fixed at its 20 hour service.

Regards

NO! they will idle poor until the motor is fully warmed up but after that i have never seen a beter idling smoother quieter motor .TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER thet are not cheap motors the dealer should make it rite for you ! maybe the carb was left with gas in it or the thermostat has something stuck in it holding it open these motors wont run rite if they dont get to the nornal operating temp.

Franks right. If this thing is not idleing you have an issue with idle speed ,proping ,or fuel quality.Hopefully the dealer that sold you this unit urged you to install a water separating fuel filter.Sometimes crap from the assembly process can get deposited in a carb.Seen this with all engine makers.
