Anyone have a motor like this? Going to try and crank it soon and may need a little input if I run into problems. The guy I got it from said it was given to him and he has no clue if it runs or not so I'm going in blind. Did a search but didn't get what I wanted.Tryed to post pics..even cut them down to 400x400 but still got the "too large" message and I don't know how to change the to 97 kb's, maybe cut them down to 200x200 pixels? First post fella's..thanks for having me. Sounds like a great group with some knowledgeable people!

The 5D10A is a 1951-1954 Gale 5 hp, gale is part of OMC, your probably going to have to redo the ignition before it well run, all readily available parts and you well definitely want to pull the lower unit and check/replace the impeller. There are a few people currently working on these motors and I have one as well. They are good little units and easy to work on.

Just to avoid any confusion your Atlas is based on the Gale 5D10.
Routine parts are readily available Under Evinrude Johnson applications.
Carb is a bit if an oddball unique to the Gale built motors.Uses a primer
by pressing on a pin on top of the float instead of a choke.
Gale built many private label motors based on the 5D10.Good as other parts sources.

Re: Atlas Royal 5 hp

Thanks for the input guy's. Had no idea parts would be available for something this old. Here's the update.. pulled plugs and checked for fire. Got lucky and had spark on each one. Now for the really good new's. It fired! After sitting for so long I was pleasantly surprised. I had some gas mixed for my leaf blower so I used it, turned the little knob ( T handle ) all the way out, turned a lever that operates the pin on top of carb ( depressed pin and gas poured out all over ) and after about 4 pulls fired right up! At that point I turned it off then put in in a 5 gallon bucket with some water in it and fired it again. Couldn't see any water coming out anywhere to indicate the impeller was working so I shut it off. I'm going to try to find an impeller and will probably be bugging y'all again on the SOP for installing it :D . Thanks again!

Re: Atlas Royal 5 hp

Also forgot to ask, there is a small metal lever on left side of engine that has a small wire cable connected to it (cable comes from lower unit maybe). Lever has two positions, up and down. Would this be neutral/forward I'm thinking? I changed positions while running in the bucket and when down appeared to churn the water much more than in the up position. And would you know the correct oil/gas mix ratio?

Hi boomer2 - That's a great little engine you have there. I'm fixing up an old Atlas 5hp too, you can check out the thread under my signature.

The lever engages the clutch in the down position and disengages in the up/neutral position. As for the fuel mixture I think it's 23:1, but I'm not sure as I haven't gotten to the "running" part of my restoration yet...

Now, how about some pictures?

Wow! Some great info in that signature thread there Bob. You must be a marine mechanic. I * hope * I can properly do the impeller without messing it up too badly :D. I thought something was missing on my motor since I had to cut a piece of rope and hand wind the flywheel.... Is your nice re-coil cover locked up at night? Where do you live? :D Maybe I can find one somewhere. Thanks for the info!

My pics are too big and I don't know how to get them down to 97 kilowatts size.

HA HA! Not even close!:D:D Without the help of the guys here my motor would be a mess!

As for the pictures, I download mine onto photobucket.com. You can choose different sizes, make sure to pick the "message board" size, I think it's 640 X 480 but don't hold me to that. Once you have them loaded in PB you can just copy the image code and paste it here. You can post up to 6 images per post here and each of the smiley guys on the right :)):rolleyes:) count as an image too.

Hope this helps.

Re: Atlas Royal 5 hp

I will have to try that with the pics Bob, I'm sorta an old guy who swore to never own a computer.. well look at me now. I wish I had done it sooner. There are still a lot of things I don't know how to do like copy/paste photo bucket and stuff. Off to the lake for now...hate to keep the fish waiting! :D

The lower unit is pretty simple to remove, just loosen the cable on the neutral clutch and remove the 4 bolts on the LU, lower unit, pull it down about 3/4" and on top there well be a compression nut? holding the tube for the cable in place, loosen that and the whole assembly should come out with a little wiggling.

Thank you, sounds easy untill the driveshaft part comes along. With you guy's coaching and the parts explosion in Bob's thread I should survive. :D I need a top cover with the re-coil assembly...anybody got one give me a shout.

I think other recoils well work from other Gail 5D10 motors as I think they all used the same tank with the same 3 recoil mounting holes and just had differently shaped recoil covers.
