I currently have ATF dexron 3 in my velvet 72c and I find it shift very hard, with a loud bang, especially to reverse. Would switching to SAE 30 help this, I was thinking it may let the clutch packs slip a bit. Is there any adjustment that can be made. I have it between a cummins 210 and a Konrad 520 drive and recently broke some gears in the upper and think this may have been part of the problem.

Re: ATF or SAE 30 for velvet

Sorry about the response delay

Your velvet drive should have Dexron III for a direct drive and Mobile 424 if it is a reduction drive. Look at your tag and if it other then 1:1 you need a complete flushing out of the drive.

It shouldn't bang into gear, what is your idle RPM?
