My parents have a couple beach house rentals out in topsail NC. They are on the beach. I brought my boat ( 18 foot open bow) so I will be staying in the sound. I have never fished salt before. And never really caught anything big in fresh water. My question is what to use here. I can fish from the sand ( surf) or get on the boat and throw some in on the sound. What to use would be my basic question? I am not fishing for anything specific. I have 2 rods. with 8 lbs test lines. and a tackle box full of goodies. I do not want to change test line because its a pain to me and I dont want to spend money !! lol..thanks guys

That is a good place for flounder in the sound. We use a nightcrawler set-up with a small spinner, bead, then a #6 hook. Prefered bait for us is cut strips of mullet, about the size of a crawler. Drift thru the sandy bottom and enjoy.

Another popular fish in the area is grey trout off the bridges at night.

As far as the beach, the bluefish will be running soon. Almost any fisherman in the area can help you with this technique. I use silver spoons and reel fast, but you will need a stronger rod and reel.

Shrimp is a standard bait for general saltwater fishing. Walmart carries frozen shrimp and frozen squid, which is also good. Small blue crabs or pieces of crabs or fiddler crabs are great baits. You can usually catch some fiddlers on the mud bars, keep them live in a coffee can, good bait! Artificial baits like green rubber grub worms(Walmart), on a jig tipped with shrimp work good. Saltwater fishing!..it's all good to me!

You are going to hard pressed to fish the surf with your set-up. There is a really nice fishing pier (couple years ago) that had heavy tackle for rent. Kingfish is popular among the locals there.

I use small cut shrimp in the surf casting only a couple feet out. Split shot sinker and a #8 hook for whiting and croaker. Fun to catch and eat.
