I read many places that to get proper shaft length you measure from mounting surface to top of water and add 12" or add lil extra for chop.....
I have 28" from mounting surface to top of water. So i doubled the 12" and added and extra 24" because of chop. that gave me a total measure of 52". So i bought a 52" shaft and with some measuring it looks like i only have 13" from waterline to top of actual lower unit(motor) and 15" from waterline to centerline of prop, and that is with the motor dropped down almost all the way. Minn kota recommends a minimum of 12 " from waterline to top of lower unit. Anyone know if minn kota's 12" minimum will be enough. i fish salt water... This has been frustrating because i thought by doubling the 12" rule i would have plenty of length, and now im not sure if its long enough. I know that going with 62" doesnt hurt because you can raise it, but my only issue is that i dont want the motor coming too far back into the boat.

i would go with the longer shaft, i would rather step over the stowed motor, than having it unit coming out of the water. i have a 52 inch shaft and had the unit come out.
