Hi ALL
I'm new here so forgive me for miss spelled words and ignorance,But i am in need of help.
Let me 1st say thanks to all that can help.
I have a 1960 5.5 Johnson seahorse that when i was going to do a tuneup on i broke the armature how? we will get to that later.
I found several on eBay the one i chose was the same part number, but the only difference is mine has groves were this one does not.
My engine has a brass ring that goes over the crank then the plate.
my trouble is that when i tighten the eBay plate down with no groves or brass ring at some point it will seize up before you get the screws torque down in place.
so when you move the throttle handle it does not work (seized up)
And if you put it in gear and try to turn prop nothing

Re: armiture/points plate

need pics of what you have! dont see any mention of the aluminum ring that goes under the brass ring that screws to the powerhead.

If you're saying that the armature place has no inner brass sleeve that rotates on the top aluminum bearing portion of the block, you have the wrong armature plate. You need armature plate part number 580210.

The support sequence is: Aluminum ring first, flat side up... Brass ring second, obvious installation... Then the Armature plate.

The length of the retaining screws is critical and factory screws are essential... hardware store screws can be slightly too long and will cause jamming.

...also, if you get the wrong mag plate, it could jam up upon tightening. Ask me how I know that!

Some of the plates have larger buldges under the coils than others, and that will contact the screws for the retaining ring.

IF you need the 580210 pm me. I have a few hundred of them :)

Re: armiture/points plate

Thanks for all your responses one person ask if i had the right part number and yes i do.
The other ask me about the rings i never touched them the one with the brass ring.
The brass ring i was talking about is the one that has notches on it to match the plate.
But the one from eBay is the right number just no notches.
After posting my first thread i found out that i think i have the wrong coils is that possible?
Because with either one or two coils when. i put the fly wheel on it really binds
How do i get the right coils?

Re: armiture/points plate

Sounds like you have the coils seated wrong. The aluminum seat upon which they sit... there is a slight bevel at the top edge of that aluminum seat. The vertical metal portion of the coil yoke must be in alignment with the top inside bevel, otherwise the magnets of the flywheel will hit and bind at that point.

This gives you the proper spacing between the coil and the flywheel magnets.

Sorry, no pictures. Simply loosen the screws that attach one coil and lift it up off of the aluminum seat slightly. You'll see the bevel I speak of. When you set the coil back down on the aluminum surface, the metal part of the coil must be right at the top inner edge of that bevel.
