I was wondering if the armature plate on my 62 18hp fd-16 should be jumping around while idling? Its not moving too much, but it seems that any movement beyond throttle control movement is too much.

here is a video of it running for the first time for me

Re: armature plate moving?

If the armature plate mounting parts are excessivly worn, it will flop around. However, much more likely is the coils are rubbing on the flywheel magnets. The ends of the laminated cores must be flush with the machined edges of the posts upon which they sit.

Re: armature plate moving?

I do remember making sure that the coils were flush with the machined edges, but now I am thinking it may be a loose or worn throttle linkage that allows excessive movement. It seems to idle fine though.

Thanks
