Are you a fly-fisherman or have you ever been fly-fishing?

I recieved a flyrod and three reels, one reel rewinds automatically, from a friend who recently move into a new home, this was left behind with a few other odds and ends in the shed outback, she does not eat fish nor does she want anything to do with fish or fishing, so she gave them to me.
I have never ever used a flyrod before, it seems to be a very cumbersome and intimidating task, and from what i've read and researched thus far on the internet, there appears to be some complexities in the various techniques involved.
I have never witnessed anyone flyfishing on any of the north texas lakes which i frequent, so i ask, is this method of fishing something only practiced in the northern climates? If so, what makes it not applicable in the south?

Can be done anywhere. Find a fly that would imitate the bait or lures you would use in Texas, and give it a try.

I bought a starter fly-fishing kit a year ago and taught myself to cast (kinda), and have caught fish. But I'm not a fly-fisherman because I don't know the complexities of the "hatch" of flies that trout eat. So far... just caught smallmouth :)

Try using small popping bugs for bream and bass when topwater fishing. It's a blast!

Not complicated, Darth. Just requires timing and technique.

I went from cane and willow poles to a flyrod and didn't fish any other way until in my 30s.

I think it was easier to learn flycasting than baitcasting without backlashes.

I used to flyfish a lot, I grew up here in the pacific Northwest so I guess you could say that would be a given. I basically quit as I got a little older and fell in a few times as I got clumbsier. It just takes practic like anything else.

Practice your casting out in the yard or empty lot without a fly or hook of any kind. When fly fishing you are casting the line, the fly just follows along.

FLY FISHING? Isn't that where you stand in 6" of water and whip a fish to death? :D

Is flyfishing mainly topwater action?

Darth - try it and you'll love it. I use a fly rod when the fish aren't hitting anything else, mainly for panfish, with pretty good success. It really is a lot of fun. I wouldn't trade it for my other gear, but I like it as an option anyway.

Get to Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shop, or whatever other large outdoors store you have nearby when they're having classes. The casting technique isn't very hard to learn at least to the point that you can actually go fishing. As JB said, it's all about timing. Otherwise, find a well-informed retailer and they can get you set up with the proper weight line for your rod and the way you plan to use it.

I lost my fishing gear a few years ago when the lake place burned down. I'm slowly replacing things and a flyrod is nearing the top of the list.

In theory you can tie a fly on the end of your mono line using a bobber for some casting weight and call it "fly fishing." One of the main differences in conventional "fly fishing" is that your rod is actually casting weight of the line instead of velocity of a lure pulling line off a reel. This casting technique usually requires more than one motion known as false casts, before making the final presentation cast. Therefore, the longer distance you are casting, the more false casts you usually make while letting additional line out with each false cast. Unless you are fishing larger species, fly reels are mainly a tool to hold line instead of winching in a fish like spincast or baitcast reels.

Fly fishing is not only a top water strategy. Although the name "fly fishing" implies an insect (adult lifecycle) with wings, a novice will miss out on action a majority of the time if they only concentrate on topwater alternatives. Most sucessful fly fisherman observe the active insect lifecycle of the water they are fishing and use flies (ie. dry, wet, emerging, etc.) that "match the hatch"

There are also a lot of differences above and beyond the mechanics which attract folks to flyfishing. One being able to offer a much more natural presentation than when fishing for most species with artificial lures. Therefore, many a flyfisherman also finds a collateral hobby of tying his or her own flies for their respective geographical area.

I was a fly fisherman almost exclusively for about 20 years. However, when the kids came along, I found fly fishing to be a difficult family activity and now mostly use a baitcaster. I still keep a flyrod in the boat for when I am alone.

Finally, fly fishing could be just as effective on Texas fish as New England fish... For the record, I like to Texas rig my plastic baits here in Pennsylvania :p

I have been a dry fly fisherman for the last 20 years. It is a great form of fishing and probably in my opinion one of the more artistic ways to fish. It is incredible in every aspect. It does require more patience and the ability to see the fish underwater (this will help with the set and success rate).
You should try it with no reservations you will enjoy it. I myself am new to the lake fishing scene, so you can always teach an old dog new tricks...............

Re: Are you a fly-fisherman or have you ever been fly-fishing?

i have done it a few times. personally i find it an annoying way to fish. too fiddly and to me too annoying a fishing style. my favorite fishing method is to plop a bait in the water and wait. i like sitting there still fishing and watching the world go by. occasionally i will use a lure but sitting there constantly cranking a reel just gets to me after a while. . fly fishing is even more so that style. i rank it right down there with deep sea trolling for marlin tuna etc but thats just my opinion. i would suggest trying it, you might like it or not but your never gonna know less you try it.

I am well equiped for fly fishing but dont use the equipement much since it's a small rod used for trout and/or small bass.

Nevertheless to me fly-fishing is to fishing .... what sailing is to boating. LOL LOL

To me, it is steath fishing. You use the line to cast a small, light wieght lure. "NO SPLASH" AND! I have caught some 6 and 7 pound bass, when nobody was catching anything. When useing a 3 pound leader and a long pole, it takes a while to land even a small fish! "For Those!" who use "CORN" to catch rainbow trout in ark. "IT'S CHEATING!!!!"
