I have a 1986 90hp Johnson on my whaler, I have the chance to buy a good 1984 90 hp Johnson for $300. Are most of the parts interchangeable? Looking at the so far the only difference I see is the carb linkage. Is it worth it to buy it just for parts? The lower units look identicle. Plus I would get 2 props (1 s/s ) in good condition and all controls and gauges.:p

Re: Are they interchangable

There will be some very minor changes between the two motors but for the most part most everything will interchange. The carb linkages are (obviously) different but do the same thing. Spending hours comparing part numbers can become very confusing. Any little change in a part will reult in a number change and may be misleading as to what will actually interchange. For example when the rear holes in the gearcase changed to slots the number changed but did not superceed. The units will interchange with no issues. You'll find a lot of things like that but your basic parts will interchange. For that kind of money you'd be getting a great deal of spare parts.

I think I will go ahead an pick it up. So far I was getting ready to look for a cowling and wanted s/s prop. They are probably worth the cost. And if I ever need a lower unit, I am going for it. :)

Thanks

Re: Are they interchangeable

Sounds like a good buy . I paid more than that for my parts motor and it already paid for itself in parts and convenience .:)
