Hoping I can tap into all the expertise here...

I found a cheap cylinder block on ebay off of a 1984 Evinrude 150 XP....My question is...can I use this for my rebuild on my 1985 Evinrude 150 XP? Are they the same for those years?

It is only $200 w/ shipping. It has been bored .030 over on one cylinder and honed on the others. My current block is at a minimum(without taking it to a machine shop to measure and verify) going to need to be bored on two cylinders(which translated to all the rest needing bored). That right there is more in machining costs than the price of this one on ebay. I guess what I am getting at is, is sounds like a good deal but, maybe I have over looked some questions I may need to ask the guy. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

go to crowleymarine.com or shop.evinrude.com and check the part numbers on their parts diagrams in the parts catalogs. If the part #'s are the same, you should feel confident that the block will fit your outboard.
GOod luck,

Re: Are these two blocks the same???

Thanks for the reply...that is where my confusion lies. The two websites give different part #'s for each of them. See below....??? Is it possible they are the same parts just manufactured by different companies and given different part numbers? Is there a master cross-referencing list for p/n's?

Re: Are these two blocks the same???

brp site for 1984
Part Number: 0395017

Equivalent Parts:0395729,0397211

brp site for 1985

Part Number: 0395729
Equivalent Parts: 0397211

according to my findings 0397211 is Equivalent Part for both cases, so yes it is compatible.

be sure it is an outboard block, not a seadrive block

Awesome! Thanks for the research! And I will definitely ask about the seadrive. Thanks for the heads up.

All of the 149 cid blocks are interchangable as far as bolting up. You may run into soe differences in bosses that the dressing mounts to but nothing that cannot be overcome. As long as it's a flat back crossflow it should work. It really shouldn't matter if it's a Sea Drive block.

Excellent, sounds good. I just got some pictures of the block in question and the heads. Does anyone see anything I should be worried about. Probably tough to tell from the photos. Thanks

Re: Are these two blocks the same???

Looks like a typical 149 cid block. Like you say, hard to see anything specific from the shots. If you're going to buy it just make sure you have it checked out size-wise by a Marine machine shop, not an automotive machine shop.

I wuldn't worry too much about what heads come with it, you'll want to sue the XP/GT heads regardless. The numbers are cast into your XP/GT heads you have now.

A few 150 XP/GT blocks used the 200 port timing. If you current block did you may notice they are a tad larger than the 150 block you're getting. Nothing to be worried about, just an FYI thing.
