Are these the right spark plugs?

I have a 70ESL-74M. Johnson. It has NGK BUHW-2 plugs in it. They look weird, and it's not running real smooth. Thinking maybe the carbs are dirty, but these plugs look strange. Motor has not ran exactly right since I've had it. Same plugs that I got it with. Compression is 105/110/90 top to bottom. Motor misses a lot. Help me fish? Please? Lol

Re: Are these the right spark plugs?

The original plugs were Champion UL77V
These are surface gap plugs with an auxiliary gap. Hence their unfamiliar appearance.

The nearest NGK equivalent, if you must run NGK plugs, are BUHXW-1

The X indicates the auxiliary gap ...... but I don't know the significance of the final -1 or 2)

My guess is that Champion L77JC4 or QL77JC4 ( gapped at 0.030") as fitted in later years would be suitable conventional plugs ( NGK eqivs B7HS-10 or BZ7HS-10)

These plugs, I have don't have an electrode to gap? And no, I'm not married to NGK, I've actually always preferred champion, in my other vehicles. So I should use the second champion number, you mentioned?

I would use the champion plugs, L77JC4 or QL77JC4.

Fired it up. Runs better that it ever has. Still a slight miss. But, that might be a compression problem. I'll be looking into how to correct that. Thanks for the good info on the plugs. I really appreciate it. I might just go fishing tonight!
