Are thermostats necessary in warm weather?

I live in Hawaii where the weather is warm year round. Between 70 to 80 degrees.
The thermostats are bad on my 83' 115 hp evinrude V4.
I was told that in our weather, thermostats are not necessary.
Without thermos, would my engine operate effectively?

It's more of a matter of water temperature. Your motor is accustomed to the temperatures it has been running at for all these years. I'd advise replacing them.

On the other hand, with substantial throttle, they are being bypassed anyhow. So I don't think you'd destroy it by removing them ... if you operate at high throttle most of the time. If you operate it slowly a substantial amount of time, you want them.

It is probably safe to run without thermostats whenever the air and water temperatures are greater than 125º Fahrenheit.

Running without thermostats makes the cylinders too cold: results in excessive wear, carbon build-up and improper mating of the pistons to cylinders.8)

What ezeke said. T-stats make your engine run at the correct temp, not just a cooler temp.

Are thermostats necessary in warm weather?

You bet they are needed. Trust me, they wouldn't put them in there if they didn't have to. Not only do they control temp. they control flow. The water needs to be slowed down so it can absorb the heat.

I can't think of anywhere, that I wanna be, where the water is 125 degrees F.

There is another potential problem called "cold seizing". Without stats (or one that's stuck open), hammering the throttle on an engine that's not warmed up can cause the pistons to rapidly heat and expand. The cool cylinder walls do not because there is no temperature control. Hence the piston to bore clearance can close up resulting in a seized engine. Is it guaranteed to happen? Try it and see. The cost of a thermostat amounts to a couple of adult beverages in the grand scheme of things.

If they didn't need them they would certainly save the money on them when they make them at the factory by not putting them in. A few bucks for peace of mind is priceless.

Re: Are thermostats necessary in warm weather?

while this is all true, I've got an 1981 evinrude v4 (140) that has had its thermostats stuck open for at least 10 years now. for a motor that old that has lived in salt water all its life, I was told it would be nearly impossible to get at those thermostats, since they live at the bottom of the heads in those years, and the cowl would have to come off.
my motor still runs, though I admit it sneezes a bit at idle and hasn't put out its full power in some time. but I can't seem to kill it either.

The '95 150 Merc has a stat at the top of each bank of cylinders. Since it is a V engine, one bank is slightly higher than the other meaning that one stat hole is lower than the other.

If you didn't have the lower hole plugged with a stat, the upper cylinder water passage would not fill completely and you would have an air void on that cylinder.

We changed the stats the other day and flushed out the engine. Happen to notice that while flushing.

Need I say more?

(Thermostat Purpose)
(J. Reeves)

Many engines are considered high performance engines and demand a thermostat(s), and many smaller hp engines also require a thermostat for the following reason. The pistons actually distort/twist off round when running. The thermostat is required to keep the outer wall surrounding the steel cylinder, and the cylinder wall itself at a temperture to compensate for the distortion.

With the thermostat removed, the difference in temperture between the inside the cylinder and the water jacket quickly reaches a point whereas (in effect) you have a oblong piston running up and down a round cylinder, or vice versa. Bottom line is without the thermostat, the piston and cylinder wall could be damaged in a short period of time.

The thermostat in your car isn't there simply to have the heater function properly..... think about it.
