Howdy,

Well what are you asking about? Sterndrives or Boats?

As far as Sterndrives, BOTH are good.

If you want to do your own work and find used parts easily, I would vote for Mercruiser. (used drives, parts etc... easier to find 3:1)

If you're going to buy all new parts from a dealer then it doesn't make any difference.

If you're asking about boat types, there is a different forum here on Iboats where they discuss makes/types of boats.....

Cheers,

Rick

If all else is equal, I like the Volvo against an Alpha due to the cone clutch (no clackety-clackety) . . .

I like cone clutches too, much smoother. I've found that Volvos tend to have somewhat more expensive parts, and they're a bit harder to find dealers and service centers for than Merc stuff. Depending on what specific drive we're talking about, they may have some peculiarities that need to be addressed. Old Volvo drives with that reverse latch mechanism come to mind.

Agree ^^^^^ and it's why I said "if all things are equal", which of course they are not.

The one you can find parts and good service for in your area is the better drive.

Our port DP-A was flying up in reverse this past weekend. It usually only does it if you put it in R with the outdrive turned. The starboard is actually chained down.

hehe, I remember the flying drive fondly from my youth. We had a '66 Donzi with a Holman-Moody 289 and a Volvo drive, 270 I believe. Ran like a scalded dog going forward, but in reverse that drive would flop like a fish on the deck. I've tried rebuilding those things before, but the last time I attempted it, the owner had a bag of used parts to work from, most of which were no better than what he had. I got it to lock down once in a while instead of never, but that was the best I could do with worn out parts. I suppose one might be able to fix that with the correct new parts, but working from a mixed bag of junk for the wrong model drive isn't gonna do it.
