Are the finger lakes ever like glass?

I live up in Rochester, NY and got a boat last spring. I noticed that things up here are a little more choppy than the waters of East Texas of my youth. Is it pretty choppy up here or is there times when the lakes are like glass? I keep my boat near Irondiquot Bay and some times trailer to Canidagua Lake.

I grew up on Canandaigua Lake. The west side of the lake is glass quite a bit because the wind tends to come from the west over the hill. Spring tends to be a bit breezier than late summer so you'll see more chop now than later in the summer. It also can depend a lot on the time of day. Early evening and morning tends to be pretty calm, but it can get some chop during the day. They're pretty large lakes so they get a good amount of wind hitting them.

I absolutely LOVE Canandaigua Lake & we vacation up there every summer! I envy your location more than you know

Yes, the Finger Lakes can be flat. They are North-South Lakes, so when the wind is out of the North or South it is not as smooth as when the wind is from the West or East.

Caught a solid week of glass on Cayuga in the late 90's.

Its hit or miss.. every time I've been out on Canandaigua lake i've found some calm areas. A lot of the wave action comes from annoying tubers running continuous circles.

cayuga seems to be relatively flat on the west side,most days.the rest of the lake seems to be fairly calm early say till 930 in morning,then again around 630 at night.and yes the wind direction being predominately from the west brings this about.
