I been checking parts costs for my 1990 Evinrude 25 HP and Evinrude.com wants
at least 25 percent more for any part compared to Iboats prices..
Is there any real difference?
Are Sierra parts ok is what I'm asking?
Any other parts outlets online any better than Iboats?

Thanks

Last question first: No, unless you want to pay the higher price to get OEM stuff.

Is there any difference? Depends on what part you are talking about. Most Sierra stuff is ok. But remember, Sierra doesn't make most of their stuff themselves, but buy it from their vendors. Therein lies the difference. Their coil vendor may be first class but their seal vendor may be not so good. (The words "coil" and "seal" are not implying anything--just a couple of words that came to mind.)

Bottom line: I buy Sierra from iboats. But there are some items that I go to the dealer for. I had to find out which ones those are the hard way--buy buying them and evaluating them. Iboats offers some items from more than one supplier. For instance, I prefer the Mallory impellers from iboats over the Sierra impellers from iboats.

agree, and i prefer CDI power pack over OEM and Sierra. CDI and Sierra, both available at iboats.

Re: Are Sierra Evinrude Parts Ok To Use?

I've used sierra carb parts and fuel pump parts and maybe some others I forget which ones, never a problem. I heard sierra was part of teleflex, not that it matters.

I just ordered a sierra water pump kit, when my local authorized parts dealer wanted $85 not including the housing, and iboats was $45 with shipping. Couple years ago the OEM full pump kit was about $60.

F R, your preference for Mallory, based on experience (durability, reliability) or something else you've observed, or maybe reputation? just curious

Ok, sorry to open an old post, BUT, as far as internal hard parts are concerned, what are the opinions? I have a '94 40HP Johnson that fried a cylinder so I need all lower parts, pistons, bearings, etc. Sierra ok here, or OEM? I have heard BOTH opinions from local shops (actually referring to Wiseco vs. OEM).

Thanks guys!

Google "boat parts" to find suppliers, you'll find lots. From my few years of buying boat parts iboats is usually the best. Quick ship, good prices. I've never had a problem with any. I've purchased mainly LU seals, water pump. I bought a set of trailer guides & keel rollers too.

Tashadaddy, whcih company(ies) were you refering to? I can find many suppliers, none that I have seen have a full rebuild kit for.

Does anyone have any experience with Sierra hard parts? Namely pistons and lower end bearings?

I know this post is near-dead, but for those who dig it up, I'm pretty bummed about the carb kit I got from Sierra for my 67 18hp. Just as an example of the 'quality' of this kit, the new hinge pin for the float does not even properly fit the carb (it binds on the bowl).

I get to go to the dealer tomorrow for OEM stuff. I'll steer clear of Sierra, for carb kits, anyway. I haven't opened the tune up kit yet.
What horrors await me

binds on the bowl? the hinge pin is stationary, the float arm rotates around it.

Yes, I'm sorry. The hinge pin is stationary, but the pin must fit within the cutout area in the bowl.

To be clear, the pin wasn't binding. It was flat out interfering with installation of the bowl. In a side by side comparison of the old pin and the 'kit pin', the kit pin was obviously too long.

I'm about due for a new water pump impeller for my '72 Johnson 65hp. Anyone have thoughts about Sierra or mallory parts for this?

Re: Are Sierra Evinrude Parts Ok To Use?

installed a sierra impeller summer '09. first one didn't fit over the drive shaft -- right part number, but the brass hub was maybe a couple-three thousanths too small. iboats immediately had a replacement shipped out no problem, didn't ask for the other one back.

The rubber itself is noticeably more flexible than the OEM impeller it replaced. Doesn't feel cheap -- no reason to think it's less durable but I'm not an experience judge of rubber. Water pressure is excellent, with no decrease after maybe 100 hours.

I too will steer clear of Sierra for carb kits. I just recently used OEM Evinrude carb kits for my 90's era 200 loopers. The spaghetti gasket is far superior in the OEM kit. It fits well, without stretching, and stays in the groove much better. The Sierra gasket keeps popping out while trying to mount the carb.

Also, the primer solenoid repair kit is just cheap. The red lever wobbles around, not like the original Evinrude part.
