Just tuned up the engine and it sounded like a champ. However when i put it in the water it started right up, but, sputtered and back fired with no power. Checked plug wires, distributor cap rotor. Replaced points, plugs and fluid. Can't figure it out.

Did you adjust the point dwell with a meter and then set the base timing?

i did initially, but, messed with the timing on the water. The distributer was adjusted fully counter clockwise, which seemed wierd.

Make sure the spring on the points is properly set, I have them float out at high rpm because the spring was not seated properly.

Re: Aq131d

What else did you do before putting it in water?
Was the timing belt changed?
Did you remove and replace distributer?

No, couldn't find a distributer cap and was hoping to avoid changing the timing belt.
