AQ125 B barely idles and low rpm's at WOT -4200max rpms and should be 5000 max

hello and thank you in advance for your help.
1985 bayliner capri 1650
AQ125B 2.1 liter 4 cylinder
I am the 2nd owner and the boat is bone stock

last summer it ran perfect and tops out about 39-40mph at 4800-5000 rpm's.
Now it barely idles and maxes out at 4200 rpms.

I had a professional marine builder rebuild the carburetor and flow test and I cleaned the contacts inside cap/rotor.
I also put in clean fresh fuel

when i add just the lightest spray of starter fluid through the mesh spark arrester, it revs up which means it's not getting enough fuel.
But the accelerator pump and jet's are clear and working well. it never hesitates when you give it gas once you get it to idle at 1800 rpm's or when running under a load.

1. Where is the best place to buy a new cap and rotor and plugs and wires and points? I can't find them on the volvo parts area of iboats.

2. does someone have a part # of a water seperater/filter from Napa that I can order online or locally?
3. is there a fuel filter in the carburetor or in line?

1. rockauto.com is great for the plugs, wires, rotor, points, and condenser. The cap is marine specific (screws for hold down) and runs about 60 bucks. Look up a volvo 1979 242 with the same 2.1L (B21F) carb motor. The cars went FI in '80 but the rest is the same. The cap listed will not work. This place has the whole sierra catalog online, http://www.marineparts.com You can find the sierra rotor and points tune up kit, fan belt numbers and they have a good fuel/water separator too.

2. Sierra # 18-7852-2 is 30 bucks and comes with a spare filter.

3. Not stock, from the factory there is no fuel filter at all. If you add one, add it inline between the fuel tank and fuel pump (the rubber hose). Don't cut the metal hose from the fuel pump to the carb!

Here's a hint on ordering aftermarket parts. Find the OEM part number first. Then when you look at the aftermarket parts, make sure it shows the OEM part number it replaces.
As far as your fuel filter element, there are different types, so you need a filter to match the housing you have. It is not an OEM part.
If you don't have any numbers on your filter, empty it and take it to the parts store and match gasket and thread size. Then write down what you have.

my trim motor stopped working but i can hear a light electrical motor noise when operating switch but it doesn't push out the shaft.
do you know how i can troubleshoot this?

Hi Don, i've searched for over an hour but can't find where they offer OEM spark plugs, wires and all ignition parts. seems strange they wouldn't so it must be operator error but if you could offer advice i would appreciate it.

Sierra tune up kit contains a rotor points and condenser, P# 18-5284. The cap is like 60 bucks and sold separately (sierra # 18-5358).

Bosch plugs are recommended by volvo (w6dc). Bosch box #7595 (wr6dc) They come with a resistor but you just unscrew them from the plugs and discard them.

Bosch plug wire set is number 09233.

Just hit the 'marine store' tab up there in the upper left and punch in part numbers into the 'product search' field.

For the trim motor, sounds like you need somebody else to hit the switch while you keep an eye on the trim motor. Its right there on the transom above and behind the starter motor. By the way, you removed the transom saver bracket from under the outdrive right? Just to be sure.

AQ125 engines came with old AQ drives with electric tilt. They sometimes just need a little adjustment, try tightening the metall cap on top of the tilt mechanism a little.
There's also a small pin going thru the axel on the motor, sometimes it will break.
Could also be internal bearings, worn threads on the rod, relays etc.
Most of the time it's the motor itself being worn out after 25 years. Iboats have new motors or even brushes for the old one available in the marine store.
And it's not a powertrim?

Thx Adeneo! not sure what the diff is between electric tilt and powertrim. my outdrive i keep tilted up when driving with a metal support bracket. then i remove it and let the outdrive all the way down. then i can use the trim swtich on the dash to raise and lower the outdrive in order to plane the boat and when idling close to the shoreline.
There is a shaft that pushes out the bottom of the trim motor that pushes on the outdrive that raises it. I can hear the motor but it wont push the shaft out.

there is a 40amp inline relay it looks like that connects the red power wires. even though i can here the motor is it possible that this relay is bad?

If you have been using the tilt as powertrim it's a good possability that you have bent the vise rod. It is a tilt only unit

updated info: the idling jet that i pulled from the outside of the carb is a 55. however, my original overhaul manual shows the Solex idling jet should be a 62. so i'm trying to find a 62. if you know where i can get one that would be much appreciated. Sierra doesn't have it.

Thx sqbtr, yes i thought it could be used for trimming. is it possible there is a fuse or do you know what i can take apart to figure out why the shaft wont come out at all?

Interesting, in this thread you have a 125A. in your other thread about your trim/tilt you have a 125B

Which is it ??????? It makes a big difference.

What are you using for a service manual, and what drive do you have?

volvo penta 270 and i don't have a manual that shows how to take it apart or what to service on the tilt system.

I was asking if you had an engine manual, not so much about the drive manual.
