As had been noted by a previous poster with the same problem, my engine had been overheating to about 225 degrees. We are cleaning the gooseneck as was suggested. 2 Issues I'd like some info on. 1) What purpose does the gooseneck and hoses perform. I know suction is created but don't know why. 2) We're having a heck of a time putting the gooseneck back on because there is so little room for my hands. I guess I don't understand why they would use an allen head bolt when you have no room for a wrench. The bolt on one side goes in easily. The other side just won't go in. any suggestions from people who have experienced this?

What's a gooseneck?

The gooseneck that was refered to is the outdrive part & hose that is found between the upper and exhaust bellows. I used that terminology because that was what the previous poster called it. If it is not sealed, I understand it sucks air in along with water. Perhaps someone can tell us what it's real name is and it's purpose.

O/k, your talking about the water hose flange, the 'S' shaped hose connects to it.

It is at the top of the outdrive pivot (the bit that swings back and forth as you turn the wheel). Running through the centre of the pivot is the raw water intake tube. If the flange and/or pivot seals are not sealed, air will be sucked into the system. Worn pivot bushes will also cause excessive steering play. You can buy seal/bushe kits to remedy the problem.

Aldo

I should add, get a manual. For this type of job, the cylmers is more than adequate - it has good exploded outdrive schematics.

It will explain how to access that area. It's not hard.

gday harris. a far easier way to replace the neck is with the top box removed. its not impossible to do it with the bellows inplace but its not easy.
top box re/re is a fairly easy task. it also gives you a far better view of all of your gimbal area and a much better indication of bellows condition.

I just did the gooseneck replacement and it worked perfectly. I used a standard allen set and while it took about 30 minutes it was not too bad of a job. While I was there I also replaced the hose and clamps going to the gooseneck. The boat runs nice and cool now...
