AQ 131D spark woes

You guys are great and I know you can point me in the right direction. I have an old 20ft Bayliner Explorer with a AQ131D/270 (730 hours). Last year, I took it out and it shut down after coming up on step (well, about as much step as you can get out of an Explorer). No spark...started to troubleshoot from the plugs back through the distributer and couldn't find anything...put cap back on and started right up.

Basically..I've replaced the points, condenser, cap and rotor...set dwell and timing. It starts right up, idles well through warm up...but loses spark and shuts down at high RPMs after running. After it cools, and I fiddle around back there, it starts back up. Could this be the coil? Or is something else happening that I'm missing....Thanks, you guys have really helped alot of boaters!

Yes, it could be the coil.

Re: AQ 131D spark woes

Thanks Don! I've had the boat about ten years over here in Juneau and am pretty used to fussing with it (curses on rubber band engines!) But this problem is frustrating because by the time I get though diagnostics, it's getting spark again. Thank goodness for a running kicker! I'll change out that coil and see if it doesn't solve the problem.
