need help bad...just put my boat in the water last thurs, after running it a bit out in the water it sputtered a bit, but after slowing down the rpm's a bit it ran fine.
the next day i changed the external fuel filter, the only thing different i did was turn the shut off valve off on the fuel filter, my thinking was that I would empty the cannister before I changed the filter...anyhow the engine ran out of fuel within 10 seconds, then i took off the cannister that holds the fuel filter, the cannister was full of fuel and very dirty.. anyhow i changed the filter and tried to start it but with no luck.
now I've cleaned out the tank and the carb. to back up a bit the boat had sat for 4 years with old fuel in it, because the gas gauge didnt work I just thought the tank was empty, but now the tank is clean with fresh gas, I did have water in the carb a few times since, but now it's clean.
the problem is now it just wont keep running, it can fire up and even run for a few seconds, but then it dies out.
after doing this for a while I've looked at the plugs and see that they are covered in a black soot. the engine is a volvo aq 125 a with a solex single barrel carb. is there something i'm missing ? every passage seems to be clear in the carb. timimg is good on the engine and the compression is 160 on all 4 cylinders....HELP

Re: aq 125 a not running

When you shut off the fuel valve, the fuel pump created a vacuum since no air or fuel could enter the filter.
Now the filter and the carb is empty and will probably take some cranking to get the filter, fuel pump, and carb full again.
You might squirt a little fuel into the carb. Start it, when it dies, repeat. It will help the fuel pump fill faster and save the starter.

Re: aq 125 a not running

i've had the carb off about 5 times don, I've found water and dirt almost everytime, now i've installed a water seperator and everything looks good and clean, not getting any water up to the carb now. I'm sure that there is no air in the system..but cannot seem to keep it running, I'm wondering if a peice of dirt or something is in a passageway inside the carb that I'm not seeing, I've blown it out several times and had the carb taken completely apart.....any other thoughts on it Don ?....thanks
