I hate to open another thread but this would help me make some decisions.

What should be the approximate speed of my Lowe 1457 (total weight at 700 lbs including boat, motor, passenger and cargo) with a 6hp, 10hp and 15hp motors?

What is the effect of motor tilt(?) on bow position?

Thinking about it, it seems that tilting the motor position to place the prop farther away from the transom would push the bow up, yes?

There are too many variables to give an exact number. My 12.3' deep and wide aluminium gets approximately...

6 hp = 15 mph (assumed)
10 hp = 20 mph
15 hp = 23 mph

These figures are pretty accurate on a 12.3 Sears boat I had. I've had a
6 hp on mine and a 15 on the same boat. I had to build a floor and put the battery and Gas tank up front to hold the bow down with the 15hp even with the tilt fully down and I Beefed up the Stern with a full Oak plank across the back from Corner to Corner.

this is the same basic boat just 50 years older. 1955 15 hp rude, had to put, stick steering and remote controls, on center seat so i could go out alone. with just me at center seat it would run about 28mph. another 200 pounder, cut it back to around 23mph.

That boat sure looks a lot bigger than 12.3. It looks more like 15 ft

Re: Approximate speed with 6hp, 10hp and 15hp?

I just sold a 14' 60" beam Grumman modified V bass boat with stick steer with a Mercury/Yamaha 15hp that weighed in at about 820lbs and did 23 mph in slight chop on the river with an 8"x12p prop. I gained nothing by increasing the pitch. and lost speed with any other combo.

Moving weight rearward helped both speed and handling as did the addtion of a Dolfin hydrofoil. I could gain a bit more speed if I left out one portable 6 gallon tank and took of the hydrofoil, I could nudge it up to 28mph or so with minimal weight.

That's pretty hard to believe! And not safe, if it does! Is your boat aluminum, fiberglass, wood?:(
