My grandfather past away a little over a year ago and he had a pontoon boat with a 2008 Manufactured date 25HP EFI Mercury engine. My mom said it only has about 5 hours on it, it is a tiller and an electric start. A neighbor of my grand fathers is interested in it. I am curious what a fair price is, I looked at ebay and saw the following:

I checked eBay used completed listings and saw two listings:

Used 2007 - $2,800 w/ remote. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-Outb...1d2673&vxp=mtr

New 2004 - $2,400 tiler: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Mercury-...459298&vxp=mtr

New 2008 - $3,360 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-25-h...4c941f&vxp=mtr

West Marine:

New - $5,699 - http://www.***************/buy/mercur...FW4Q7AodW1IAKQ

We don't want to give it a way at the same time I don't think my parents want it to keep it in storage. What do you guys think it is a fair price for all involved? My mom thinks my grandfather bought it a couple years ago and didn't use it much. Oddly enough he had to about 90 when he bought the motor, he got a Jetski in the 80's. He was one of the strongest men I have ever known. He got me into motor boating and I am glad I have all the fond memories. Would $4,275 be too much?

That's a "I don't really want to sell it" price you picked. The neighbor is interested because he thinks he's going to get a steal since he's the neighbor guy and not a complete stranger. Now that you know what some of these motors are worth go see what he offers. I bet he low balls the carp out of you.

I guarantee you, he is not going to pay $4200 for it, have him give you an offer, then you will know if he is really serious or if he thinks he can steal it.

We need a model number to even make an accurate guess.

A tiller on a pontoon?
Carbed or efi?
power tilt?

I don't know where you got the price quote on the new motor for $5699, but I can buy a brand new one for $3600 - $4400, depending on the model.

Anyway, a used motor, no warranty, and its been sitting.

$2500, tops.

West Marine lists that motor new at $5699, but they are also one of the more expensive stores around.

Sorry, I missed the "efi" in the first post.

$5699, isn't that more than MSRP ?

Defender is selling them new with warranty,
  • Mercury 25ELH EFI 4-Stroke
  • 25 hp, 20" Shaft, Tiller, Electric start, $4028

Add power tilt, and they go for $4440.

Can get them about 100 cheaper from a dealer in IL.

So still $2500 tops.

When it comes to boat motors, I have not seen MSRP really matter much, those dealer put them out there at a high price and then "Negotiate" to give you the best deal. Car dealers used to do it all the time on the real popular models, just cause the manufacture says it should sell for a certain price, does not mean that is what they ask.

Thanks for the input, I tell my parents to see what he wants to offer for it and I am thinking of suggesting they try to get $2,500-2,700 for their upper limit go from there. There is always ebay...

I did see a craigslist in Austin going for $2,000 for 2004, so I am thinking as this is a few years newer and my grand father took care of everything.

I did some additional research and found that the following:

F25ELH
Electric start, long shaft, Handle

It doesn't not how power tilt as it would have PT added to the end of the line.

On a side note I am suggesting they sell the boat and trailer w/ the engine. I think parting them out will make it a headache for them to sell the old fiberglass pontoon boat.
