New to the forum. I just replaced the water pump on the 2006 150 Opti and was testing the pump with ear muffs and I get no tell- tell thru the pee hole. Does anyone know if the stats have to be open before it will pee. The pump was working fine before replacement, just doing it for preventive maintenance. I've read some threads that say it could take a few min. because the stats have to be open which concerns me. Anyone have any experience or knowledge. Thanks

Re: apalachman

Most stats open at 140-145 degrees F. on the motor. It could take some time before the water dose start to flow from the tell tail. If the motor gets to where you can not hold your hand on it then something is wrong. Are you sure that the water tube from the LU to the motor is in the grommets and not miss aligned, when you put the LU back on the motor? Is the impeller key where it should be in the drive shaft/impeller, and not have fallen out when reassembling the water pump? These are the most common things that can happen when the water dose not flow from the tell tail. Running a piece of weed eater string up in the tell tail will remove any bugs the might have nested in it ,if the motor has set for some time. JMO

Re: apalachman/water pump test with ear muffs

Thanks oldman. The water tube was the first thing I thought of and I dropped the LU to be sure it was in the tube..and it was. Even took the water pump back down to check the impeller key. I don't have a pressure gauge or smart gauges but the hopefully the guardian horn works, so I'll let it warm up a little longer. I done several water pump replacements before but this is throwing me because of the test. I'll let you know what happens.

Re: apalachman

Cranked up the Optimax this morning and let it run longer. When the thermostats opened up it stated peeing from the tell-tail using the earmuffs. Wow! That seemed like an eternity before it started peeing. My other boat and all others I've had would pee immediately using the earmuffs. The things you learn. Thanks again Oldman

The next time you have to pull the stat, look at it real close to see if it has a small bleed hole in it to let the air and water to start flowing quicker. Some stats do have the hole and others do not. Ones that have the hole are better as far as I am concerned. They will stay closed till the motor reaches the temp. and then open, but at the same time will let any air to be blown out the tell tail and will weep water some so you can see that water is flowing to the motor.
