Yup. Find a used generator kit. The tough part will be finding one with the proper mount. The generator started as an option in 1957. Place a free ad over at the AOMCI.org website.

If the motor is tuned and running well it will take very little power to start it. Most folks never have to recharge the starting battery all season unless they run additional components from the battery.

is it even worth putting one on it? It wouldn't put out many amps would it? I mean you couldn't charge a trolling motor battery could you?

I don't know the output, but I'd guess 6A. No charging system is designed to recharge batteries. They are only meant to maintain the charge of the starting battery. So no, its not really worth the trouble or investment.

I just purchased a Nissan 5hp 4 stroke for a trailerable sailboat. I had the factory install the alternator/rectifier kit. Is it as simple as connecting the red and black (2 wires only) to the pos/neg battery posts and away we go?

Yes, if they supplied the battery cables hook them up and go.

Your motor is incomparable to the 1958 Johnson 35 hp.
