This offer came free with a new Dell computer and says it's "free for life" for Dell customers.

I've seen good reviews of it but before I sign up I wonder if there's any catch anyone knows about? After a little research, it looks like the basic identity monitoring is free, and you can upgrade to a better service, which of course costs extra.

OK, here's the catch. Go a little further in signing up, and:

By checking this box, I accept the terms and conditions and privacy policy between myself and TrustedID. I also understand that I will be receiving TrustedID service for $39.99 per year including a minimum three month commitment, unless I call to cancel . Cancellation prior to the minimum commitment will result in a charge for three months of service.

So now the question becomes, how can Dell say it's "Free For Life"?

LL, I think you just found out why Dell customer phone lines are busy, I know I would call.. The wife got a Dell laptop a little while back and It was filled with "free" offers like yours. Check closely, there are more.

OK, mopping is done and I contacted Dell.

It's the same sort of deal as with the antivirus, you get a free trial membership for one year, then after that, unless you cancel, it's $39.99 per year.

How the heck does 1 free year equate to "free for life" unless Dell thinks you are on death's door.

The IDSAFE prodcut is a free for life time, no catch.

The 39.99 fee is to upgrade to an upgraded version of the product i would call TrustedID directly to find out any further details, great free service. 1-800-653-7373
