I would like to hear from anyone who has owned/ or currently owns one. We just bought ours on Valentines day and even though we had done alot of research on it,,,it doesn't beat someones experience with them. This is all that we got....

1986 19Ft Bayliner Capri 1950 CX Bowrider ( beautiful shape )
125 HP Volvo Cylinder Engine with sterndrive
Speedometer doesn't work, but the Hummingbird Model 383C ColorGPS/Fish finder works in it's place..

New Sunbrella Bimini top
New bellows
New U joints
New Bilge Pump (07)
New prop, spare prop
Spare impellar
4 fenders
2 floatation cushions
5 pfd's
4 rod holder sockets with 2 rod holders
2 paddles
3 mooring ropes
2 anchors
Brand new boat cover with bag
New Trailor Spare tire
New Trailor hitch, winch, LED lights
"Big Stick" anti Trailor theft lock
volvo muff
Flares, first aid kit
Large fishing net
And some bottles of cleaning products...

they were asking 4,200 and we got them to go down to 3,600...Unfortunately, but honestly good, is it is winterized,,,we didn't get to hear it run,,,,but they showed proof it was running last summer, and was winterized in Oct 2009. I didn't want to give asking price honestly since we didn't get to hear it run, but it had tons of stuff we wouldnt have to buy, and the boat is REALLY IN GREAT SHAPE..I didnt' want to take the chance of missing out on it...

The price you paid is on the high side. The fact that it has new bellows, u joints and impeller might make it worth it. Buying a boat without a test run is very scary. It sounds like it was cared for so you might be fine. Hopefully they cared for the engine and drive like the rest of the boat. Replacing the items I listed above is a good sign.
As far as the boat itself, bayliner is an entry level boat. The brand on a boat of that vintage doesn't matter though. The only thing important is the condition. A cared for bayliner is way better than a neglected cobalt of the same year. Good luck.

I have an '85 1950 vp4, so it's very similar. These are remarkable combos,
as long as they have not been abused, and you know its limitations.

The vp4 will pull up a skier or boarder, but it will not pop them up.
It's great for cruising around and weekending. The ride is very smooth and
quiet. Gas mileage is superb, and actually unbelievable.

Only time I had a problem was when the ignition got damp from towing
through a torrent of rain, and then camping in a foggy area. I had to dry out
the distributor each morning for about a half hour before it would start.
I don't have that issue where I live, thank goodness. Keep it tuned up.

You will find more info in the Bayliner forum, at the bottom of the main page.

Keep it well covered in winter, with a cover and tarp, and a stepladder as
a support for the cover.

I greatly appreciate mine, and take good care of it. The little things, like oil,
lubrication, and plugs, all make everything go a long way.

Learn safe boating, as not everything is intuitive.

Post if you have any questions or issues, and somebody will answer, usually.

Congrats on the boat, and enjoy it this year!

:)

I agree that the price is a little on the high side, but for one in great shape (and with a fishfinder/GPS that goes for over $400 new) you didn't do too badly, especially if it meet your needs. Mick gave you a lot of good advice in his post.

How is the sole (aka "floor" to landlubbers)- any soft spots? Bayliners of that vintage are notorious for rot (don't ask me how I know that)?

It would have been nice to get some kind of guarantee the it runs and the drive is sound. Those old Volvo drives are fairy bullet proof, but with out a sea trial you just don't know.

I wish you good luck with it. And we are always here on iboats for your questions. Just remember the only dumb question is one you didn't ask until it was too late.
