i need to make a lifting sling for my johnson 140...i dont want to use a lifting eye because i would have to take off flywheel nut everytime i needed to lift it, i'd like to make it out of webbing like from a ratchet strap...i need to be able to lift it vertical with a engine hoist so i can mount it on my engine stand by myself....if anyone has made one or have any ideas for me please let me know.. i cant do anything with my new motor until i get it on a stand :%

Y ou don't have to remove the flywheel nut using the OMC flywheel puller with lifting ring, You can ceartainly use web strap's,.but the rigging is up to you. The thing is, use caution, that engine is heavy, don't get hurt! Don't have the kid's around doing this.

Fashion a flat plate with three holes that match those in the flywheel. Buy a large eye bolt at your hardware store and mount it in the center of the three holes. Attach the plate to the flywheel and lift away.

Yeah, I used to have slings for lifting motors long before they ever thought of using the flywheel holes. Still very handy where the motor has a recoil starter etc. Actually, you need two, one goes around under the front and the other around under the rear.
Fashion a large circle of webbing and fold them around a metal ring at the ends. As I remember we took ours to a canvas shop and had them sewed on their heavy duty sewing machine.
Place the slings under the motor and tie them in a single knot over the top of the powerhead, which keeps them from sliding off the slippery devil.

I've often used a puller (harmonic balancer puller < $20) with three bolts into flywheel. Then just get some rope under the puller body to a come along or chain hoist for lifting. Cheap, won't slip and easy to rig in a few minutes. BTW, I had an '85 J140 and the lifting eye didn't require anything to use. Never seen one under the flywheel.

yea i dont want to use the flywheel nut lifting eye because its hard for me to get off the flywheel nut and then torque it back down..i used to have to bring my force to a tire shop to use their impact wrench, total pain in the rump..so lifting ring is not an option.......the 3 holes on top of flywheel are stripped about a half inch down in all 3 holes......so that leaves a sling....i'll try to figure something out and take it too a canvas shop for sewing.. thanks

When I lift an engine and I don't want to use a lifting ring, I have a length of 1/4" steel cable covered with vinyl. I make two loops, fore and aft, and then connect the two ends together with cable clamps. The breaking strength of the cable is about 350 pounds (conservatively stated by the manufacturer. since you are doubling the cable, and each end is only seeing half the engine, you are well within the safety margins of the cable. Here is a picture of how I lifted a car engine:

I used my harmonic balancer and a threaded eye rated at 2200lbs (from hardware store 6.99) with 2 nuts to adjust the eye, bolt the balancer to flywheel. I lift my Johnson 150 with it 8)

I hope you never need to remove the flywheel. Sounds like someone used crappy bolts in the three holes instead of Gr8's.

You might try getting some climbing web at an outdoor store. It's a flat nylon strap like super-tie-downs. Climbing web typically has breaking strength in the thousands of pounds. That and a couple of caribiners should get you there pretty quickly.
