Anyone know of MOSFET Rec/Reg installed on an outboard?

I have a 88 Merc 175hp. Recently have trouble with the Rec/Reg and considering replacing one. Rather than spending 700 dollars on an OEM or 800 on a CDI replacement kit, I found this MOSFET rec/reg used on bikes. They are the newest technology with less heat and stable output and never burn the stator. Just wondering if anyone has knowledge about doing this on a boat motor.
Besides, if I do go this way, there won’t be a grey tach wire. Can I T off the yellow wire from stator? Any wrong with that?

You can tee off the yellow wire for the tachometer.

Does that VR have the capacity for the charging system of your motor. You should make sure, I know the later models have dual 20A VRs. I think the older models were less amperage, although some were single 40A VRs..

Thanks for your valued input. Yes, mine is single water cooled 40A VR which is a bad design. Merc changed it to a dual VRs in later motors. The MOSFET R/R I was looking has a capacity of 50Amp so I think I should be ok.

Is it potted? If not it may not hold up to the corrosion inherent to the environment.

Looks pretty good. The original was fastened to the cooling water jacket to help keep it cool. I would recommend the same.

As I was reading the spec, this one generates way less heat and air cooled but I will again find a way to keep it cool
