Anyone know if this might work

I recently purchased a "starter" boat - 15 foot fiberglass bowrider with a 1972 50 HP Mercury outboard.

My brother-in-law asked if it had power trim/tilt.

After some discussion about what that really meant I thought it might be worth investigating.

I got a line on a "Power Trim unit for older model Mercury outboard, 65-100 HP". What I have been told so far is the electric motor has been overhauled, the person bought it used for an 85 HP Mercury and never installed it.

My questions are
  1. How do I determine if this unit might work on my 50 HP?"
  2. If it will/might work, what is a fair price?

Thanks for any words of wisdom

OK, first of all, please check to make sure that one is not already installed. You can refer to the two photos as to where to find it. Fair prices are around $200 for used and $3-500 for new. They are either single post or double post rams.

No, the 72 models had power trim that was externally mounted on the transom bracket.----The motor / pump / reservoir unit was mounted internally in the boat.

Ahhh... thanks racerone. That should make it easier for the OP to check if it exists or not.

Thanks
I think I understand about internal mount. If I can make it work I'll attach the pics that I received:

Any further comments appreciated.

Buck, You have the correct style PTT unit. I never thought that a PTT unit that fit a Merc 85HP motor, would fit your 50HP motor. I am not positive, but I would recommend you find out for sure (Fazt?), before purchase. Where are you located?

The only part number I see is 64461A7 - at least that is what I think it is and it doesn't come up under mercruiserparts.com
Is there some other place I should ask the person to look for a part or serial number.

Thanks

That T/T unit should work for your motor. Measure the length of the cylinders with the mounts just clamped on to the transom of the boat, to make sure the cylinders are the right length needed for fitment. JMO

The crowleymarine web site will show PTT component part numbers. See if the cylinders are the same. If they and the PTT brackets are the same numbers as the 850 of the early 70s, you are good to go.

Re: Anyone know if this might work

I am displaying my lack of web savy as I can't find the proper reference on the mercruiser or the crowley web sites.

Maybe, as a person new to the lingo of boating, I am not looking for the right thing.

Any detailed help really appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Anyone know if this might work

OK, your motor never came with PTT, from the factory. Your upper shock pin and transom clamp look to be the same as the 1150, which came with PTT in 1972. The Swivel Bracket is different. The shocks are different as well. So the swivel bracket may be shorter, as Oldman indicated. You would need to measure minimum length of trim cylinders and see if they will fit. Remember the PTT cylinders bolt to the lower shock mount, and to the PTT transom brackets (not part of your motor now) at the top of the transom.
