Anyone know about Kenner boats? & Scout boats?

Just wanted some opinions. I'm here in eastern N.C. and the fishing is on! Anyways, I've been around quite a few boats in my young life and I'm looking to purchase my first. I've found a Kenner Bay style boat that looks good and in my price range, but don't know anything about them, as far as strength, ride, and just overall performance. Can anyone chime in? This just in... what do you think about Scout boats for those in the know? 177 sportfish?
Thanks in advance.

New or used? Makes a big difference because the used boat shopper has far fewer choices ...

I'm just finishing up my first season with a 2004 Scout Dorado 175 dual console with a 90 Yamaha hanging off it. I'm loving the boat design for its no nonsense, hose er down, self-bailing interior; wood-free stringers, floors and transom; high quality fittings, supportive seats, heavy duty vinyl upholstry, and tons o storage.

As I've posted before the hull shape is a little unusual, designed to trap air under the hull for a smooth ride and increased efficiency while providing a stable fishing platform for walking around. Scout calls it Air Assist or some such and the theory's great on glassy water or in bigger rollers but a one foot chop coming at you on the quarters can rattle your teeth a bit. Personally, I don't think there's much substitute for good ol deep v for ride quality but that can make for a boat much heavier than I wanted.

The engine's great -- seems quiet and powerful to me but then it's my first four stroke. The e-tec guy's will be quick to tell you it's heavy and short on torque. (There's a rather alarming Evinrude video on Youtube showing an e-tec dragging a Yamaha backwards until it swamped and flipped over. Murderers!)

Go take one for a spin in various conditions and see what you think. I'm quite happy with it so far. Used ones within our budget weren't too common in my parts so I made a two thousand mile round trip to get this one. But them I'm crazy...

I'm looking at used boats. Bay boats or Skiffs. I fish mostly the Neuse River, which it' pretty much like a large bay, as well as down east in the tidal creeks and salt marshes. Most of my fish, trout, red drum, flounder and stripers are coming out of 2-6 feet of water. I'm looking into skiffs also, but I know they don't take chop as well. The Kenner is only 1000 lbs. which seems on the light side, so it may not ride well either.

Check the boat manufature pages at the bottom of the main forum page. Both Kenner and Scout are listed there.
Welcome to iboats.

A bay boat or skiff with a little "V" in its bottom sounds like a good fit for your area. In the used boat market you will have better chances with the more popular brands. Some others with boats in that size are C-hawk, Maritime Skiff, Polar, Sea Pro, Sea Chaser, and Sea Hunt. Enjoy the search!
