I just bought one from Summit Max they are like $10.00 off right now for the Alpha 1 and no drilling required. Installing it next week end.

I had one on the last boat (Alpha drive) and have one on current boat (Bravo X drive). Yea, they're overpriced for what they are but I wouldn't have a stern drive boat without one. Whether or not the drive runs any cooler may be debateable, but the drive stays clean and the lube is like new at 50 hours so that makes it worth it to me. That you don't have to drill holes in the drive is a definite plus.

The ONLY downside I can see is they sometimes will grab a stick (or whatever) and the prop will start to blow out. A quick blast in reverse is usually enough to clear it. I have this happen once or twice every spring when there's some trash in the water, but that's a small price to pay for the good they do (and potentially do if you believe that it actually makes the drive run cooler....not everyone does). Oh....and the extra drag will reduce your top speed by a tenth of a mph. ;)

I recieved mine the other day. I also plan on using the permatrim hydrofoil... So I'll have to drill holes in it.

Because trim tabs are more than I want to spend, and I believe in the concept. The permatrim is the nicest hydrofoil on the market currently, which is why I chose it.

no sterndrive or outboard manufacturer recommends a hydrofoil

they do nothing except give people who do service on the drives a headache (they don't fit in drive stands very well)

if you are having problems planing it is a prop issue, trim issue, or cavitation plate hieght issue

i have driven boats exactly the same with and without them and note no difference in performance
