I would guess that 45mph is around top speed.I have a 1991 220 XL [ 22'6'' x 8'6'' ] with the 350 mag and that's my top end.Not going to be any big difference between the two blocks speed wise. Now if your talking about service and parts I would lean towards the Merc as they are all over the place, not so much with the VP and that should come into play with your decision. My hull is very smooth in the rough stuff,22 1/2 degree dead rise vs most boats that length that are in the 18 degree range .

I have a 2003 Regal 2200 with a mercruiser 350 Mag MPI engine & a bravo 1.. I believe the 2003 is still the same hull design as the 2008. I would agree with the boat riding very nice in rough waters. We went from a 19' maxum to the 22' Regal. The Regal has a very good hull design and has enough weight that we dint get pounded in rough water like we did with the smaller boat.

As for top speed it will all depend on your prop. Right now I am running a 16 pitch Solas Rubex HR4 (4 blade Stainless prop). My top speed with that prop is aroudn 48-49 mph. When I run a 19 pitch 3 blade AL prop or I can easily get up to 53 MPH. If you do a lot of tubing and skiing I would high recommend the 4 blade prop.

Overall I love the boat. It handles very nice, and has a lot of room / storage for a 22' boat. We frequently have 8-9 people on the boat all the time (4-5 of those are usually kids). I have look at a lot of boat & personally if I buy another boat I would probably buy another regal. Great price vs quality. I don't know how new you are looking, but the 2200 FasDeck is also a nice looking boat.
