I've got this buldge about belt level just to the right side of my p*n*s. I talked to the doctor and he didn't seemed concerned. Problem is, I am going to retire from the phone company in a few months and have taken a job with a new company. I don't want to go into this new job with the potential of having surgery right after I start. I can have the problem fixed before I retire, but do I need to? Don't want to go under the knife without a d*mn good reason. Symptoms are: occasionally I have a knife-like pain in immediate area. Frequently I have burning and minor pain in area. Question, How long do I have before I need to have it surgically repaired. Anyone had a similar affliction? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: anyone had a hernia?

Not personally, but my son did, and other male friends of mine have had a hernia there. They could actually push the thing back in, as a hernia is just a rip in the muscle and the underlying tissue bulges out between the rip. My son could honestly watch the thing push out and he could push it back in, but yeah, he had burning pain along with it. Some hernias do not need to be repaired, some do. You might be better off with a second opinion! There are Doc's who specialize in that type of surgery, so you miught should ask your Dr. to refer you. If it is small, it can be fixed with small incisions.

The only surgery I ever had was a Hiatal Hernia, and I have 5 scars fromte h incisions, and have had nearly four years of relief now from having that fixed. I recommend the Doc to anyone who even thinks they might need that type of surgery. He was the first in our area to do it, and taught other surgeons the process. Man, he was good, and I was back up and around the second day, though it was about two weeks before I was pain free completely.

Good luck!!! Don't let it just go, though!!!

Definately get a second opinion. Just because one doctor isn't concerned doen't mean you shouldn't be. Lots of idiots out there masquerading as doctors so you have to watch out for number 1. Inguinal hernias left untreated can lead to serious intestinal complications. As stated above, get it checked out ASAP.

Get it checked again..that is your intestine you see poking out. Its absolutely nothing to play around with.

Co-worker had that - about belt level. He went in for surgery on Friday and was back at work on Monday, limited duty desk job.

Sounds serious to me. I haven't had a hernia, but I have tried hard to give myself one.Today I help my dad get his new 600 pound gun safe into his house. I'm built like a tank, so everyone calls me for the heavey lifting. Oh my poor back.

Seriously thoug, if it were me, I would get a second opinion, and maybe a third, and a referal to specialist.

Re: anyone had a hernia?

I've had 2 surgeries for hernia, 2002, and 1987. On the second one they did it arthriscopically and I was laid up for over a week. With the first one I was feeding the livestock within 4 hrs of surgery, so don't let them do it with the scope if you can help it. And get it taken care of fairly soon. just a little friendly layadvice...

hernia's should be repaired, the problem is that when the tissue is avulsed (out) it can be choked off from the blood supply, and dye, become inflamed, infected,or even go ganggrene, a not so nice situtation.
assume you have good health coverage, may not have after retirement, get it done.

Re: anyone had a hernia?

Thanks to all, I will definitely get it checked. First thing Monday, I'll call for an appointment. You have convinced me. BTW, the Dr. did give me a surgeon's name. You guys are great. This forum has really been fun to read and it's cool they way everyone tries to help. Mark.
