I inherited a boat, 65 starcraft, and the capacity plate/ serial number is gone.

I have the NYS registration and am trying to figure out if the serial number is coded into the numbers on the reg.

Hoping someone here knows if it is. Dmv and web searches are no help.

Thanks in advance.

To answer your first question....no the NY # has no bearing on the HID/SN - totally random. BUT the registration will have the HID/SN on it...Looking at your registration you have Year, Manufacturer and...HID/SN. **I pulled mine out to confirm.

Is the registration transferable? If so, you're golden. They'll more than likely want that and a BoS (bill of sale) to assess taxes. You'll get a transferable registration in your name and keep the NY #'s on the side of the boat as they move with the boat to the new owner.

Probably one of the easiest transactions you'll ever do at the DMV.

You're welcome to message me if you have more questions...my wife works for the DMV in Niagara County NY.

My brother ended up with the same situation on a inherited 14 ft gruman aluminum fishing boat. took the tag off the transom to replace the transome wood and lost it.... The DMV gave him a new HIN number. Dont recall what forms but he went to DMV got forms filled out then had to call local state police barracks, they send a trooper out who looks at the boat ensures there is no existing HIN on it signs the form you go back to DMV and get a new registration... IF they find a HIN I susopect they must verify it is not stolen...

It may have takena trip or two to DMV but wasnt a huge PITA

Here's how mine reads....

New York State Boat Registration
NY #
Year Manufacturer (5 characters) HID/SN (12 characters for me)
Fibre I/O Pleasure
****and so on***

Key part will be whether it reads Transferable (ie you're holding the actual title according to NYS) OR Non-Transferable (there's a separate title you need).

Trailer, if you have one, is another beast. I can get info on that too if needed.
