Anyone ever open up a powerpack?

I just replaced a dead powerpack on my 86 Johnson 9.9. I am an electronics technician and just want to crack open the dead powerpack to look inside and possibly fix it. The bad thing is, the circuit card is epoxied in place.

Has anyone ever tried to take one apart, and if so, what's the best way to do it?

I tried it a couple of times, just ended up smashing it with a hammer. Never got one opened up well enough to see what was in there.

Ive tried often too with no success.
Ive become convinced that they make them that way to stop that being an option...

Re: Anyone ever open up a powerpack?

Many years ago I designed and built an alarm system control module and did just that, potted it, for just that reason... So no-one could copy it easily. I know it makes life difficult for people who are capable of fixing things, but it makes it so much harder for pirates... Double edged sword I'm afraid... There is another issue here too... Weather proofing. Potting makes things impervious to the elements.

I have done several Merc switch boxes with success. Easily repairable cracked solder joints. I cut the aluminum case all around and pull off the back. This exposes the circuit board.

Haven't done Evin/Johnson but I would heat up the potting material with a heat gun until easily removed. Don't be scared to heat it. The component side is likely inward. Its the circuit side you need.

when i go about fixing something , how deep i go is solved by this question..... Are you going to throw this away???
If the answer is YES......open it, If the answer is NO .. Send it off to be repaired

I'll bet you are not a "Electronics Technician" as OP is....
