Brat Eating Contest

I remember when they "Glutton Bowl" on FOX a few years back. I questioned the HUGE waste of food when they would dump a whole bunch of it on the middle of the stage.

There are plenty of starving people out there, and yet this is a sport?? I'm not sure I get this one...........................

Lots of poor folks can't afford shoes, but I own 6 or 8 pair. Something wrong with that too?

Just because you can afford something, or have something or have lots of something does not make it wrong just because there are people who have none of it.

That same logic goes for your stuff too. It is such a shame that you are the only one who uses your boat. It sits there unused 90% of the time. Maybe we should let the less fortunate use your boat while you are working.

A boat is a luxury, and you dont need shoes to live. You can live without food, it isnt a luxury.

My position is how do you call this a sport. Soon I guess, we can expect competitive dumping. Points awarded based on weight and speed.

How about competitive sleeping. How about competitive blinking.

This is entertainment not a sport. And it would be far more interesting if only local folks got to participate. The entertainment is in the performance not the quantity. Pickin on your friends afterwards is what would make this type of thing fun. Flying in a "professional" from NY or Japan just would not entice me to watch. Watching a buddy from High School downing some of Sheboygans finest sausages and making a fool of himself would cause me to make time to watch.

Definitely not a sport. A sport is an athletic contest.

I would call it a vulgar spectacle.

Re: Anyone else find this sport wrong?

Where are you going to draw the line between the "haves" and the "have nots".

Yep, that food could have gone to feed needy people. But then again, the people who donated or purchased that food for that event chose not to spend their money on the "have nots" and spend it on hot dogs for an eating contest instead.

Boating is a luxury, just like you said. That means you have money to spare when there are people who are dying because they can't afford health care.

The same argument says you should give up your luxury money for your boat and give to the needy to save their lives.

The bottom line is this: You can not have your boat unless there is someone starving to death. You can not go fishing unless 3 or 4 babies die every day of mal-nutrition. It is the way the world works. Always has, always will. There is absoluely nothing you can do to change that to any extent measurable.

Once you even it all out, make sure the starving are not starving, the dying are not dying, everyone will have nothing.

Re: Anyone else find this sport wrong?

I only reference it as sport, because the people in the contests call it that. They practice and prepare for it too.

Of coarse you can live without hotdogs Mark, you can live without any of the foods they eat. I am simply suggesting that a couple hundred sausages could feed quite a few homeless people for a day. If a company is willing to shell out that much product for an eating contest it would be nice to see them do that a few times for a food drive or something................maybe they do idk.

I know what you mean. It would be a nice gesture if the organizers included a statement that an equal amount of food or money was donated to an appropriate cause.

But they are not morally obligated to in my eyes.

But it would have been a nice thing to do.

Pony,

It is difficult to say anything. Johnsonville, or Klements might make a pile off of this publicity and give thousands of dollars to a charity to feed the hungry instead of sending hundreds of sausages, that just wouldn't make it to those who need it.

If you want to be disgusted, check out a McDonalds dumpster. Hundreds of good burgers thrown away everyday. Look at it this way, if they were eating fish eyes, or a rocky mtn. oysters would you feel better about it?

Want to find waste, this is an ever so little example of it. At least some people had some fun over it. I too find some things a waste and maybe worse, but there are examples of that we can all point to everyday. Check out your cities budget...:%

It is kind of funny how some of the most fun things involve the greatest waste. Big trucks, boats, red meat, (some might put women here, but not me), $300 haircuts, central air, designer clothes, etc. Gas is at about $3.15/gallon, and brats are about the same. If they ate 200 lbs of brats, the gas to get people to the event was probably a bigger waste than the meat.

Just a thought.

Man you folks have way too much free time!

As far as the McD's dumpster, while I don't find it a healthy habit to be dumpster diving at Mickey D's, I would think that is the healthiest place to put one of their burgers.

The reason they are "shelling out" all that money for food is because they are making it all back, and more. Eating contests are a business just like anything else. If a company instead decides to invest their money in homeless people, then the company gets nothing in return and they go out of business.

Thats nothing. Philadelphia has the ":Wing bowl" A wing eating contest every year the Friday before the super bowl. They fill the whole wachovia center to the max. 20.000 people. It used to be all locals up till about two years ago. They all have an entourage of wingettes, beautiful local girls with bikinis . I love it. I went down there a couple of times, very entertaining!! Not a place for the weak at heart, it gets nuts. The miss wing bowl contest gets waaaay out of hand.
