I'm interested in adding the led strip lights to the cabin, and low in the cockpit area to illuminate the floor during evening running.

I don't know anything about the LED strip lights. I see these at JCWhitney that are 12v. Can they be cut? Are they suitable for my use?

Mark,
I highly doubt that those are cutable...Most LEDs you can cut (usually every 3 diodes) have a flexible silicone base or backing..
Do you know whose brand they are? That would help me to help you a bit more..

Well, JCWhitney doesn't give much info about their products, but this is what they do offer:

Permanent bulbs?last approx. 40,000 hours! Mount easily with tacks, staples, nails, etc. (not included). 3/8" mounting lip for easy installation. Approx. 12" lead.

I have LED cockpit lights, they really light the deck up at night, next will be the live wells and compartments but these are the individual ones.

I am undergoing the same project. I ordered some of these. I will use them in various storage compartments and for floor lighting. Waiting on them to arrive for installation.

i dealt with LEDs for years (most for architecture applications, occasions for boats), have to admit that i collected quite a lot junk from ebay...most of them look similar but big difference in terms of lighting quality and lifespan. My favorite is the Flexstar sereies LEDs from Lucensbright in Ohio, they're submersible and stay cool after even years. When you install those LED strips, be sure to use 3M VHB type as extra protection (sometimes those adhesive tape just not adhesive enough under water), they are firm like concrete and water resistant...

I ordered some (cheep) led strip (blue) lighting from ebay (4 strips with a 3m backing on the back). They work better than I hoped and look (imho) pretty good. I mounted them in the cockpit area (front and rear). Good light and a nice effect. I wired them on a separate switch so if I'd rather use the standard csty. lighting I still can.

So how did yall figure what size wire & fuse to use ? I have 8 led strips that have 24-30 leds in each strip. I plan to put them all on the same switch.
Thanks for the input.

WOW, those LED's are going for $25 each here in the local stores

I bought and installed four of the same in my boat last summer. Found them at a clearance outlet and paid $9 each and thought I found a great deal. Next time I need to check here first.

Thats a pretty good deal Sprintist, and 96 diodes is a LOT of em..
Doesn't mention any channel for mounting, but I assume you could tack some 5200 or some other adhesive for mounting..
I do think the 100k hours is incorrect..They product I sell is specification grade for architects and designers..and we rate ours @ 50k

TIP: anybody buying these for marine use..ask what the "IP" grade is, you want to hear "IP67"...weather and waterproof..

I will watch your resto thread to see em installed!

Yeah... I'll have to figure out a way to mount them. I could always tie wrap then to the wiring in the gunwale storage. They will more than likely get adhesived to the top of the storage area.

I didn't want them too crazy bright in the gunwale storage area but I just want then to last so I don't have to dig them out of there.

Their 100k on the hours is possible but probably not likely. As long as it is not 8 :)

Re: Anyone add LED Strip lighting to their boat?

I installed led rope lighting around 4 years ago to do the same thing, light up the floor at night. They have worked great ever since. Being encased in plastic rope is good for the wet environment. They have gotten dirty and had to use a degreaser on a rag to wipe them down so they are clear again but highly recommend them. I got 2 maybe 12 or 15' long and wire tied them under the gunwale on each side to light the floor up.
