Re: Anybody try these exhaust manifolds

If you were boating in a perfectly clear contaminant free water that coating would be great, but unfortunately you're not. contaminants such as sand are running through the water jackets and pretty much rub any coating away pretty quickly. I was thinking of powder coating the inside of my new risers and intake manifold but was told by local mechanics that its been tried before with no luck. But who knows they could be wrong...

Ayuh,... The Real question is, do you want Powder Coated, or Painted....

I guess my real question is, are they any better than the others out there? If not what recomendations do you have.

Thanks. I called them and they have the "OSCO" brand. Total price for everything is $680. She told me they are not coated but simply primered. Do I want something that is coated? Or like previosly mentioned does it even matter?

Re: Anybody try these exhaust manifolds

the osco's have lasted longer than the amount of time that I kept any boat I've put them on.

So what do you guys think would be a better choice. Osco's or HGE or Barr? And are any of these as good of quality as the ones from Mercury? All the aftermarket manifolds have a drain on the bottom that I can put the black and blue drain on the bottom right?

You can get the HGE complete kit for 469 bucks from ebasicpower.

I have installed them on a few boats and they fit really good.
Barr manifolds are good too.
Most of them do come with just black primer so paint them well before the install.

So to paint them..... Do they need to be prepped in any way for paint, maybe a light sanding? Also is there a specific paint to use or just a black high temp paint, Gloss?

Ayuh,... A light scuffin',+ the paint of your choice,... Plain ole Rustoleum is pretty hard to beat...

Are we talking about the inside or the outside of the exhaust and water channels?

I can't see how painting the outside with Rustouleum would protect the inside passages carrying salt water and debris...I think this is where most of the rusting comes from...IMHO.

The insides are going to wear no matter what you use.
I prep the new ones with acetone and then paint the outside with a couple of good coats of black.I use a commercial high solids paint but Rustoleum works just fine.

Like Bondo hinted at, electroplated/deposited is NOT CERAMIC coated but powdered coated. True ceramic coated requires baking 'porcelain' to the base casting.

If your boat is FWC or fresh water run, there is little advantage.

I am in salt water as much if not more than I am in fresh water. So I want to get the best set I can. Does it even matter when I am getting after market ones which ones I get? Doesn't really sound like it does. Weather they are primered and I paint them, or they come painted or powder coated it doesn't really make a difference.

not really. It's like a toilet flush after every use and everyone is happy.
