Thx W

how about some more details on the goose and the boat you plan to pull and your location

most likely it's not gonna be a problem but some states and some combinations could be

its a 30' gooseneck and an 18.5' boat. boat and trailer weigh appr. 2200lbs. flatlands mainly. got an f250 4x4 crewcab shortbox 7.3l diesel. i was told that i should not pull a tandem behind a tandem. boat trailer doesn't have brakes.

should be FINE as long as the goose is loaded and both have proper tongue weight ... keep in mind that the boat trailer will reduce the tongue weight of the goose

tandem behind tandem makes no difference whatsoever

well that's good. thanks. this is a pretty substantial gooseneck and it has a receiver on the back already. i don't think it will notice the boat.

btw when you say "make sure the goose is loaded", what's the significance of that statement?

not knowing the weight of the goose or layout, double towing with it empty may be a problem... you want your lead trailer to have a significant weight and length advantage over the second to minimize sway....

Besides, if the goose were going to be empty then you would likely be loading the boat and trailer onto it

thanks for the info. i'll need to check the length/weight requirement in the various states where i'll be using it. the camper will be a custom build project.

now that its feasible to pull my boat behind the trailer. i'll build a full blown camper on it with the back portion for hunting and fishing equipment etc. i would love to have gone the slide-in cab-over camper route, but with a shortbox and gvw limitations using what i have and building the camper makes more sense and will be a lot cheaper.

Re: Anybody towing their boat behind a fifth wheel camper?

I've done it with a variety of camper/boat combinations. The main problem is ensuring your weight distribution (center of gravity) for each trailer is well ahead of the axles. Since you're planning to use a 5th wheel, this shouldn't be a problem. I've tried it with a bumper pull, but it needed additional sway controllers between trailers to ensure stability on the road. The first one had no trailer brakes, but the truck was OK to stop it all. The last two have brakes on everything. You'll need to adjust the brake controller when you have both in tow. I found mine needed a higher setting to ensure the surge brakes were activated on stops.

I have some pics below, but there's an older Ford->Prowler->Bayliner picture I can't find. I'll keep looking for it. If it matters, the last pic is with a short-bed truck (6' 4").

Here are a few of mine:

Two bumper pulls: (worked OK but not stable without additional sway control)

A newer version, with a 1-ton Crewcab (5-speed standard, w 7.4L gas): Actually was a little too much truck...

And the latest version, this time with a Dodge Quadcab (5.7 Hemi w tow-pkg, auto tranny): Borderline on GVWR but still enough.

thanks for the pictures. i 'll be able to control the weight distribution pretty well. my boat is a war eagle 861 aluminum; not as heavy as your fiberglass.

Those are some great pictures. I wish I could tow like that. They don't allow it in VA.
OP, where will you be taking this rig? The vast majority of the east coast states do not allow double towing. Just something to keep in mind.

Re: Anybody towing their boat behind a fifth wheel camper?

next summer i want to do the same thing, i only have a bumper pull 26 ft trailer and my 18ft tahoe
im close to the limit of my truck so i plan on changing out the gears for 4.56's just to give me a little bit of room to work with i also have a sway control hitch that is good to 12000 lbs

but for me this is only for the situations where i dont have a friend or family member that can tow my boat for me when we go away, we tend to stay in ontario so i can have up to 75 feet of fun behind my truck, the funny thing is i have to have a pickup to do it with mine if i had a suv even a 2500 suv (excursion/suburban) it would be illegal go figure
